A Meandering Narrative

Yesterday Ed had a minor medical procedure at a facility in in Fort Myers to remove the film in one eye that sometimes forms after cataract surgery. He regaled me with his repartee with the nurses. They wanted to wheel him out but he insisted on walking out, remarking that “I may be what’s left of ‘To die for but I’m not dead yet.'” To prove his point, he decided it was okay for him to drive and I shot that down.

On the way he wanted to stop at a new German restaurant he had noticed and said I should turn left at one of those middle-of-the block access points. So I turned into it at which time he said, make a U turn. Well, for @#$#@@, you couldn’t have said that to start? I turned the car around and he freaked because it was a “bad” turn. Well, yeah. Luckily it was a quiet road. Anyway, ha ha, the restaurant was only open for dinner.

Later in the day, he said, let’s go there for dinner. So we jump in the car and go there. When we get there, we discover that one of the things missed on the earlier stop was that they were closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Well, we were committed to eating out and drove around looking for a Cuban restaurant he was sure was somewhere around there. On the way we passed Nestor’s, a Greek restaurant so we went there.

I had rice and shrimp Santorini and Ed had lamb shanks because he loves lamb. The owner had a cousin who married a girl from Filiatra, my parents’ home town, so we had a nice chat with him. I think he was lonely. He said Greece was very expensive now. I was there in ’86 when it wasn’t so pricey. And where you could easily get confused in Athens because all the streets were built on goat paths. You miss a turn and think you will get “right” by going around the block. Oh, it is to larf. You make two more turns and you are hopelessly lost.

I got a take-out container for the portion I didn’t eat and Ed finished it when we got home.

Meanwhile, I am going to roast lamb for a get-together with Nadeen and Mickey in a couple of weeks and I am researching a recipe for Greek-style roasted potatoes. It isn’t too involved but I have never done it and don’t remember what Mom used to do. Garlic and lemon and oregano (rigani) are involved. Of course!

xx, Teal

Sounds like a nice change from fish, chicken and beef.
