Laws That Suppress

There was a program on this afternoon about prohibition – a documentary. I wasn’t really watching, I was doing other things. But it reminded me how bad a law the 18th amendment was, how it led to widespread criminal enterprise and how the citizens, the upright as well as the downtrodden, were on chummy terms with their bootleggers because they wanted their liquor and no one was going to stop them.

The minute the amendment was repealed, all the bootleggers were out of business. No more machine-gun confrontations between rivals and no more ingeniously cooked whiskey killing people with toxic substances. Voila! Peace in our time.

It got me to wondering what would happen if the Republicans succeed in getting the White House and start to implement their platform that includes not only criminalizing abortion but also criminalizing contraception. Do they really think this will work? Can’t you just see the population at large, including Catholics, conniving with the underworld to get what they need? I can. I can also see, in addition to back-alley abortions, competent physicians jumping in for a fee, one step ahead of the law. Particularly if they need to augment their income in the face of draconian reduction of Medicare fees, another part of the Republican wish list. Hey, it’s the 30’s. Let’s party.

The only disagreement I have with what you say is re the "draconian reduction of Medicare fees." The ambulance company that transported me to the hospital last year submitted a bill for $3,663.65. The medical community takes advantage and overbills for everything. The hospital won't even let you take your own pills, they insist on providing them, for substantially more than you paid to begin with. There are too many examples to even list here.

hospitals overbilling has nothing to do with Medicare. We have to overhaul the medical billing system.

I would like to see drugs made legal. It would stop the drug lords in their
tracks. No one has ever been able to legislate morality, and if the religious right has their way, it will happen. You and I have seen how it
works.

The Republican platform and the views of Ryan and Santorum, and lately Romney is following in their footsteps, vow to do this very thing. I don't think I am paranoid when I merely observe what is in the platform and what they are saying. How am I supposed to react? You're right, these things will not happen if we do not vote the Republican ticket. If we do, then all bets are off.

If you really believe the government (Republican or otherwise) is EVER going to criminalize abortion and contraception, you've become more paranoid than the followers of Glenn Beck. That's never going to happen in your time or mine, and you know it.

One has to wonder if the voters have thought all this through to the consequences in their personal lives.

Yes abortion will go back to the way it was--unhealthy, not safe and that stupid hanger --I also know how better it would be to make marijuana legal--first of all the prisons would go empty==oh wait--that means the guys in charge would lose money--that won't happen!
