Isolating

Amazing Grace was on TV a couple of times this week. It assumes wretchhood and the melody is boring. Whenever we have an emotional event, someone drags this thing out and a pop star sings it and people wallow in it. To me it’s cloying and self-indulgent.

I had a 6 month checkup with my internist and learned my thyroid no. is very high so I have gotten my Synthroid raised and waiting to see if this is the reason for my falling-down fatigue.

In September Ed and I ordinarily have our wedding anniversary/my birthday celebration by going to dinner at the super special Tarpon Lodge in Pineland, on the edge of the bay – you follow a long, narrow winding road through the woods - and come out on the sea. What is more perfect. The food is New York great. The dinner prices are high. The view is fabulous. Huge lawn, gazebo, boat dock -- you can sail in and tie up for dinner. But I am not sure we can do that this year, even if they are open. Dining indoors kinda of spooks me.

Our friend, Joan, who usually visits every year in late January had to cancel because of the virus threat. I totally understand but do miss seeing her. She inherited lots of money so stopped her free-lance career of editing for major publishing houses. Now she volunteers at a Queens stables that works with disabled children helping them relate to horses and teaching them how to ride. But that is on hold too and the horses were moved to the country.

I don’t see getting back to normal very soon. Meanwhile, it’s good I can listen to pianist Oscar Levant on YouTube. His playing all these years later is a reminder that genius is forever. There’s a clip on You Tube from the movie, “An American in Paris” (he was Gene Kelly’s best friend in that) – so it opens with him lying in bed thinking about playing Gershwin’s Concerto in F in concert, and it moves to the concert hall and from there on it’s fascination. Few videos exist because they didn’t have video taping in 1945. If any of you decide to listen to this, let me know. He was also a great wit (he said he knew Doris Day before she was a virgin).

xx, Teal

These self-isolating, physical distancing days will continue for many months, I suspect, probably through the coming combo flu/COVID-19 season. Perhaps a coronavirus vaccine will be available by January. Please take best care, dear T. Florida is such a virus tinderbox.

I agree about that song. Overdone, universal appeal to the point of being a cliche.
