We have held back on getting another kitty since we lost Ziggy in early May. Yesterday there was a cat show in Fort Myers, and they had cats for adoption, So we went. But the place was a zoo. There was an entire room for cat products, hundreds of people. Cats were being kept on counters in soft cat containers with a mesh opening so you could see in. To interact, you would have to open the container. Most were sleeping, probably as a defense against the crowds and noise. I appreciate that these people loved cats, but I really didn’t want to know any of them. You had to be there.
We decided to leave and go to the Gulf Coast Humane Society, about 15 minutes from the cat show. They led us to a room with several cats running freely. One of the first we saw, a cream colored male named Garfield, came up to us, was friendly, purred. So we adopted him. He is two years old. Last night, he slept for part of the night on Ed’s side of the bed. Later he moved to the closet that used to be Ziggy’s favorite. Max never uses that closet. It was touching to see it occupied again.
But today, he hasn’t come out of the closet. Maybe because the TV is on all day and he dislikes the noise. I took food to him there. He is receptive, but not gregarious. So I will let him choose what to do next. He is a pretty cat, and very sweet. He may be more outgoing as we enter the week. Ed will be going out a lot and I can keep the TV off – no war movies or Westerns. Meanwhile, Max hasn’t interacted but hasn’t been hissing either. And when Garfield is hiding, he goes around looking for him A good sign?
