Fred Pohl and the Past

Frederik Pohl died. The New York Times hedder was: Frederik Pohl, Worldly-Wise Master of Science Fiction, Dies at 93, and the first paragraph of his obit, by Gerald Jonas, follows.

Mr. Pohl, who grew up in Brooklyn, edited magazines and books before finding renown as a writer. Perhaps the most famous of his novels was “The Space Merchants.”
*****

My late husband Jay, before I knew him, was married to Carole. They had a daughter, Karen, but Jay did not raise her. Soon after Karen was born, Jay and Carole divorced and Carole married Frederik Pohl. Fred adopted Karen and she went through life with his name.

As the years passed, an earlier alienation ended and we were often guests at the Red Bank, NJ home of Carole and Fred and I grew to know Karen. Then they sent her to school in England to separate her from what they thought was an unwholesome crowd she was involved with. That effort apparently succeeded as Karen became more worldly and avoided some of the shallower aspects of growing up in this country that often plagues our young.

We went to Karen’s wedding and that is the last time I saw her. Subsequently she and her husband divorced. He committed suicide. I was in touch with Karen in 1993 when Jay died, but she was not inclined to form a relationship. I guess she had her reasons. But after that I did try to reach her but could never find her. She would now be in her late 50s, which is hard to believe.

I also wrote to Fred but he never answered. I am nonplused that people can be so dismissive, but they are.

Fred and Carole subsequently divorced and Carol remarried and moved to Canada. Carole was 10 years older than me, so I guess it is possible she is gone too. Fred also remarried and was living in Palatine, Illinois when he died.
I’m sorry everything happened the way it did. I wanted to continue a relationship with Jay’s only daughter. She had his look with a hint of his Iroquois heritage -- just beautiful. But it was not to be. I don’t know where she is now but I might try to find her through Fred’s agent.

xx, Teal

Thanks for including this. No one else saw that post because of the screw-up with MyBloggers. I'm losing too many people.

I live near Palatine. Here is the obit from the local paper. A small notice for one who was mentioned in the NY Times and other national papers.
I guess he kept a low profile here.

Author Frederik Pohl, who over decades gained a reputation of being a literate and sophisticated writer of science fiction, has died at age 93.

His wife, Elizabeth Hull, said Tuesday that Pohl died Monday at a hospital after experiencing respiratory problems at his home in the Chicago suburb of Palatine.

Pohl wrote more than 40 novels. Two of his better-known works were "The Space Merchants," written in the early 1950s with Cyril M. Kornbluth, and 1978's "Gateway," a winner of the Hugo Award for science fiction writing. Pohl was a literary agent and editor before getting his own work published in science fiction magazines of the 1930s. He's credited with launching the careers of James Blish and Larry Niven.
