Alert: Heartbleed Virus

Heartbleed is a bug that invades websites and steals information and is currently pervasive. The site(s) explaining it are full of technical jargon that I cannot follow, so I urge people to Google this for themselves.

One site offered a link to learn whether one’s oft-used sites are vulnerable. I learned Amazon and Facebook are not affected. But MyBloggers is vulnerable. The following copied paragraphs might give a techie insights into this, so I am pasting them in.

How to stop the leak?

As long as the vulnerable version of OpenSSL is in use it can be abused. Fixed OpenSSL has been released and now it has to be deployed. Operating system vendors and distribution, appliance vendors, independent software vendors have to adopt the fix and notify their users. Service providers and users have to install the fix as it becomes available for the operating systems, networked appliances and software they use.

How revocation and reissuing of certificates works in practice?

If you are a service provider you have signed your certificates with a Certificate Authority (CA). You need to check your CA how compromised keys can be revoked and new certificate reissued for the new keys. Some CAs do this for free, some may take a fee.

I am sending Eddie a separate message with this information.

I just spent one hundred and fifty eight dollars getting the virus's
out of my computer and it was well worth it. It is like having a new
computer.

We spent over $200 in the last several months dealing with computer problems. One thing I learned is that when you take advantage of a "free" download, you may also be downloading add-on files that will cause you headaches. Ed just solved a recent problem where we couldn't get on the internet reliably. He re-set the modem. How does that happen? For a while some months ago, no action was without pop-ups clogging every site.

Yahoo has been slow to work today, probably because everyone's changing everything. You have to change not only passwords but security questions.

I clicked on a link on fb that was supposed to explain the problem and my droid said the site was untrusted. MyBloggers isn't an https to begin with and it doesn't collect valuable info from us anyway, so I'm not too concerned about blogging. Banks et al are supposed to inform users when the fix is in place and then we should change our passwords.

One of the articles I read said it doesn't do any good to change our passwords until the sites we are logging into have been fixed. I'm not sure if we'll be notified when that is.

I read the same thing. But, also, I haven't been signing out of any sites because it is bothersome. Guess, I'll have to suck it up.
