Free Trial Offer My Ass

Note to self: Don't eat cake before bedtime--it might keep you awake. That's why I'm up here at  5:15am on the computer.  Now I want to tell y'all about a product  I  think uses  deceptive advertising. I've seen these ads in print, heard them on the radio, and seen the promo's on TV. It's for Proactive, a skin care product. So, after hearing the ads for "Free Trial Offer" and free this and that included in the offer, I bit and called the number.
So the telemarketer says "Besides the free skin care product you also get a free facial mask product , etc."   So I say okay, and the guy says that'll be $29.95 plus shipping and handling. Well, sugar, that ain't free. He says Well do you expect the company to give their product away?  If you don't like it, you can return it. That's what "Free Trial Offer " means.
Well, no, when  you say free, I expect to get a sample free. So I said forget it. So that's what I learned--I learned that "Free Trial Offer" means if you don't like something you have to pack it all back up and pay shipping and handling to get the d*mn stuff back to them and hope you'll get your money back.

"Free" is the biggest come-on of all, isn't it?

I bought two “specially shaped” pillows for $19.99 with separate S/H not long ago. Big blurt about FREE pillowcases. Yeah, free until you had to pay the shipping and handling on them…$9.99 each. As it was and as I suspected, the pillows arrived with the pillowcases on them. Bloody rip off bastards. I vowed never to buy from any of the product “makers” and instead go to Overstock.com or the like.

Hi kj; I normally don't respond to Free Trial Offers, so I didn't understand the concept--that it's not free, you gotta buy the damn stuff first then try to get your money back if you don't like it. Instead, they ought to call this type of marketing Money Back Guarantee, but that doesn't sound as good as "free."
Like you, this experience taught me to leave the product hawkers alone!

I was looking at a website tonight where you enter your name and it's supposed to tell you how many searches have been done on your name and maybe by whom, although I'm not sure about that, but then they wanted my email address, and I thought, nope. Not giving that out. I can live happily in ignorance of who is looking for my name on the Internet.

Pretty soon with an email address, there would be some of those scammy Nigerians contacting you!

I think I finally learned my lesson when I clicked on an offer for free coffee creamer. One page after another of questions about all sorts of BS. Then I started getting email from the products I answered questions about. Still haven't received any coupons for Coffeemate.
comment by jjoohhnn on Nov 5, 2010 12:39 PM ()
Hi jj; Geeze, these companies do that target marketing want to know EVERYTHING about you. I thought Georgie Bush's homeland security phone taps already knew everything about us. Ha!
Coffemate oughta be ashamed of themselves.

True that.

I tend to have nightmares if I eat before bed.

Hi you lovely skinned thing! You're too too cute to need any of that!

Another catch is that when you trial to cancel the "free trial", they never get your message and you start getting dunned. Like Randy says, the lunch is not free.

Hi teal; I remember back in the dark ages when you could send of for a sample of something and they'd send you a two weeks supply or whatever, and if you liked it, fine you'd go out and buy that product, and if you didn't, no harm done. HA! Not today.

I was thinking about ordering some for Adrienne. She is getting a wee
bit of acne.
comment by elderjane on Nov 5, 2010 5:41 AM ()
Hi jeri; It's not for me, but maybe it'd work for Adrienne. Probably any skin care counter in a department store would have products that work just as well.
Now this is the odd thing. I didn't have acne growing up. It's only just as I've reached King Tut's age that I get skin breakouts sometimes.

Good morning, Sue! Enjoyed your post on the yellow cake. I keep a box handy at all times, just for those "sweet tooth" moments. Never thought about peanut butter (actually, I buy almond butter). Perhaps it's baking time on this chilly day. Oh yes, and remember the adage, "There's no such thing as a free lunch".
comment by solitaire on Nov 5, 2010 5:15 AM ()
Hi sol; I don't know why I get these urges-- rarely-- to bake a cake. One or two slices and I'm done and if my cousin doesn't want it, it gets thrown out. Never tried almond butter!
As for the free thing, it's a hook the crooks use to get ya to buy something, but dammit, when they scream free free free, you expect a free sample!
