Ghosts and Speed

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009
I came home Sat. afternoon just as dusk was falling. It had been rainy and warm for several days, but at dusk the rain had stopped and the air got chilly, causing fog to begin to form.
Across the road from my house there is a frog pond in my neighbor's pasture, and fog had formed over it and writhed in ghostly tendrils over the road toward my place. I parked in the driveway to watch it. The fog was a white wraith reaching with slow graceful embrace toward the trees. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Drove to Leakesville to get milk and eggs. It seems like I'm in the store a lot lately, but every time I get ready to eat, I can't find anything in the frige to cook..My Army Sgt. husband called this "Piss Poor Prior Planning." Ah so. I suppose I should make out a menu and have things on hand.

I drove with a highway patrolman ahead of me the whole way, and I made sure I stayed behind him. Just about the time a truck passed me, the HWP put on his bubble lights and turned around. Yikes! How could he tell I was speeding with me behind him? But no, he was stopping the truck. Good!

Coming home saw that two HWP cars had pulled over a guy who was standing outside his car with that "deer in the headlights" look on his face. I felt for him--OH how I hate getting stopped, and it's been a looong time since since that happened to me. The only way I can move fast these days is by putting the pedal to the metal, so have a tendency to gun it. But being good (and getting older) has made me more cautious.

Y'all be good, and cool it, y'hear? susil

In 2007 there were all kinds of highway patrol (they used to be called The Courtesy Patrol back in the 1960s) driving up and down the canyon and a couple of times I met one coming from the other direction only to see them flip a U turn behind me as if they were going to bust my sorry butt for driving 10 mph over the limit on the downhill portions of the road (let's see.. wear out the brakes or let gravity have its way with me?) but in 2008 I hardly saw them. They must have found greener pastures for harassing people. Can't wait to see if the priority will swing back for 2009.

I obey the speed limit and frustrate the pedal-heavy macho types but at least I don't hog the fast lane. Ed pushes, so he must lead a charmed life. We have not been stopped. My neighbor was telling me her 18-year-old son gets stopped all the time for not much, a broken light parking light, etc. -- whatever. She thinks he is being profiled (teen-ager behind the wheel!)

You write quite beautifully... Your husband talks like mine!

Hi Sue; Two things-1. As you can tell by the newsletter, I would love to be able to write like you. Such a vivid picture you paint. 2. I had sweet potatoes and was going to make a casserole. I baked the potatoes then discovered I didn't have all the things needed. So I will have baked sweet potatoes for awhile.

Wish you could have some of my down the hill neighbor's eggs. She has a variety of chickens and some ranging from beige to brown. They are beautiful and so fresh.

I have to set my cruse. If I don't, I'm doing eighty before I realize it. Haven't had a ticket now in about ten years, and I DON'T want one!

Like I've said before, there's plenty of food around my place. Just watch your speed coming up I-65! Hope your health is good.
