A Brother Named Sheep

Most obits are sparse now since people have to pay for them to appear in the paper, but one was 4 paragraphs long, and was a mini biography. It was so entertaining, I'm sharing parts of it with you:

Pauline Givens "Polly" Dale's mother was 45 years old when she was born in 1917.
Polly met her husband Jimmie Dale on a blind date. They fell in love and after months of courtship, they eloped and married in Silver Creek. After the ceremony, Polly went back home to Monticello, and Jimmie went back to Prentiss.
It was two weeks later when they saw each other again. The marriage was kept secret until Polly began telling her friend Lucille how serious she was about Jimmie. Lucille was excited and said they needed to start planning a wedding. At this point Polly and Jimmie knew they'd have to tell everyone they were married.
Mrs. Givens (Big Mama) stayed in bed for two weeks after hearing of their elopement.
Polly and Jimmie had four children, and on their 50th anniversary, Jimmie went all over town looking for just the right suit and tie. They enjoyed the event since they had never had a real wedding.
Polly enjoyed cooking and it was a good thing with three boys--she made 20 biscuits at a time. Sports was a big thing--one coach asked the parents to prepare a meal of roast, potatoes an vegetables Polly cooked and left the house for a while. When she returned, her sons and six other football players had eaten it all. The coach couldn't figure why some of his palyers were so sick with a stomach ache.

Polly was an avid seamstress who made her children's clothes--she made a wool suit for her daughter to wear to the Gas Bowl and ballgame.
Polly enjoyed the holidays and decorated for each holiday, and loved having all the ever growing family over.

Christmas was quite a show as she displayed her villages and collection of over 100 nutcrackers.
She was preceded in death by (a long list including parents, sisters, and a brother named Sheep Givens.)
The obit reads Pauline Dale, our Honey, leaves many wonderful memories.
Doesn't she sound like a fun person?

She does sound like a fun person and the individual who wrote the obituary certainly captured her personality and flavor.

Hi red; I agree; the writer did a great job and captured Pauline's personality so well-that person loved her it's clear.

I would like to know more about her when I have time to google it.

Hi jeri; You can go under hattiesburgamerican.com and find the obit for Pauline Dale. It was too long to blog the whole thing, but it was nice.

The person who wrote that obituary must be a real character. Gosh! It makes me want to join their family or at least sit down with them for a cup of coffee.

I googled the brother's name and got the whole obituary and have saved it to enjoy when I'm feeling down. I like the part about Shorty on crutches and Tater who witnessed that secret wedding. One reason for listing all the relatives is so they can show the obituary notice to the airlines and get the bereavement fare.

Wasn't that a goodie? Best obit I've ever read!

The local country radio station does obits after the 8 am news and I don't believe anyone pays for it. Some of them are lengthy with many details, but I have to laugh when the family includes the name of every grandchild and sometimes the names of the greatgrands as well. Everybody wants their 15 (3 or 4 in this case) minutes of fame no matter where they get it from.

Hijj; I never heard of obits on a radio station--that is a novel idea!

My Mother and Daddy were married for several years before they told anyone; it was during the depression and the company for which she worked would not hire married women so they kept it a secret for almost two years. How times have changed!

Hi peach; For sure times have changed!

Obits can be charming histories, as this one is. Why did the boys get sick on her food? Was there something amiss with it?
comment by tealstar on Oct 9, 2011 3:31 PM ()
Hi teal; The boys got sick because they ate so much of it!

Yes, indeed! A charming, heartfelt remembrance.

Hi marta; when I see obits in the paper for someone who has lived for 80 years or so, it seems a shame to have an obit with the bare details. It seems more fitting to tell the story of their life even in a brief biography like this one did.
