Barnacles

The Pearl River Community College in Hattiesburg has been running small notices in the paper that for $25.00, student dental hygienist are available for appointments at the college. After reading that heart disease and posssibly Alzheimer's is caused by bad teeth and gum disease, I thought I'd better get checked out. I made an appointment--it took a month to get in, but my day arrived yesterday.

So I get there for the 1pm appointment and was pleasantly surprised. They have a new facility on the campus for health and allied services. It was easy to get in, not too much walking, nice people in reception. As a new client, it meant filling out about five pages of paperwork, nothing onerous.
I was taken into the student lab part, with dental chairs and equipment in cubicles. It was open and bright with large windows. I was assigned a superb dental hygienist student named Miss Key. I am ashamed to say the last time I had my teeth cleaned, and apologized to her before hand. She was wonderful, and did the most thorough exam I have ever received. She went over the forms I had filled out line by line, asked about my medical history, asked about medications in depth, examined my skull, neck and throat, did an oral exam, and had the doctor come over to examine her progress every step of the way.

Finally, it was after three pm before she started picking, hacking off and scraping off the plaque on my teeth. It was like scraping barnacles off a ship's hull. She worked and worked, being mindful to be gentle around my front crowns. Then she polished my teeth and applied flouride. It was 4:30pm before it was all over.
I gave her a $20.00 tip for the excellent service. I wrote a letter to the editor today praising her and the facility. A long--but positive experience.

I'm glad you had such a good experience! I haven't had my teeth cleaned in a while either... I went to one of those clinics about 30 years ago when I was pregnant with my son and I didn't have such a good experience. The girl was so slow that after 2 hours she wasn't done! I stopped her anyway. I just couldn't take it anymore.

My daughter is a dental hygienist. I spent HOURS in her chair while she worked on my teeth when she was in school--two years worth. And I had to drive 100 miles to get there. But the price was right (free)! At first, it felt strange to have my own daughter probing around in my mouth, but she didn't think anything about it.

The real test would have come if she was studying to specialize in urology.

I said to the dentist who supervised the students, that being a dentist or a proctologist was an opportunity to examine people from either end of the alimentary tract. It takes a good person to want to make a career out of working in people's mouths. You sure were lucky to have a daughter to work on your teeth. Kudos to her!

That was a good experience even if it took forever.

You know me, always the pessimist, so it had a very positive experience for me to to write well about it!

What an unusually nice experience. I have my teeth cleaned every six months and have done most of my life. You should try now to get them cleaned at least every year. Despite my regimen, my teeth were still getting dingy and a friend recommended a mouthwash, Colgate's Peroxyl (Walgreen's). It isn't advertised as whitening teeth, but it does.

Hi teal; Miss Key will be graduating in May, So I will go back in six months, around February, for another cleaning from her before she leaves and goes back home to the Coast.
I stopped to write down the Colgate Peroxyl and will try that out-- thanks for mentioning it.

I think of the time spent in dental chairs for long procedures as being similar to going on a long airplane trip - all those hours spent sitting still. The best thing those people can do is be non-judgmental and forgiving so we don't get discouraged and never go back.

The students take a long time because they're learning, but it still surprised me at how thorough she was, and didn't mind the time it took.
My old dentist has an assembly line attitude and doesn't really examine your mouth. I stopped going to him because he would enter the room wearing gloves he had worn to examine everybody else down the line. That's a no no for me.

I used to put off dental work and it ended up costing me hundreds extra in the end for crowns and root canals. Guess your exam turned out pretty good!

Your reply to solitaire was just too funny!

I think everybody puts off dental work, and pay for the consequences of it.
I wish the new Obama health plan would cover dental work to some degree--people put put off going to the dentist because of the cost.
