4f

When I get up every moning the first thing I do is turn the radio on to NPR. So this morning the news was about Kenya, and Iraq etc. ad infinitum. This is the thing about wars: It's the young, the healthy, the able bodied who in every war since time began are sent out to be slaughtered.
It's the 4F types (or is it 3F, I'm not sure) who stay home to reproduce--the men with bad eyesight, poor hearing, back problems, scoliosis, flat feet; the myriad of physical and mental problems that get them a deferment from military service. They live to procreate, while hundreds of thousands of fine young healthy men in the prime of life died in WWI and WWII--not to mention Vietnam, the Civil War, Korea,-- and that's just here in the US.
I've written about this before; I know "that's the way it is," but maybe that's one reason the world is in such a mess--4F's are running it.      Susil

Sue I was going to disagree with your main point about the best and the brightest being sent to die and the weaklings staying back to continue the species. I was going to argue that those with enough money or the right connections never had to serve... but then I realized they were just another example of the ones making your point, LOL!
A year or two of national service for males and females after high school would be good for everyone. Those that drop out instead of graduating would start their service earlier - as soon as they drop out.

I confess I was 4f due to severe allergies and a little perseverance. I've posted on this subject before. And although 2 of my 4 kids inherited my allergies, they also carry my intelligence and good looks! That's why I had 4 children--to even things out.

I agree with jd. We should never have abolished the draft. I have known so many young men who went into the military and came back so much more mature. I do wish the US would quit trying to police the world. It is senseless and pointless. Korea, Vietnam, and now Iraq have accomplished NOTHING, and yet we lost so many young men.

Jondude is probably right about young men serving in the military for a time after they get out of highschool in order to acquire self discipline. I think one year in the military should be mandatory. This war is a sin and a shame. Just think, we tore up Iraq and killed thousands and our young men are being killed off and families torn asunder.
We need to admit that it was a mistake and get out. We can help them put their country back together without the loss of life.

Serving your country is one thing. Dying in a war that should have been avoided is something else. I wonder if everyone who lost a son over there still feels that the born again Bush deserved to be elected. It seemed to me, even at the time, that he thought he was on God's mission. Still does.

They are the 4fs and the ones with deferments. I was 1A when I enlisted and served my first 3 years. In college I had to join ROTC to be able to afford it. So after 4 years of college (no damned deferment) I was commissioned an officer and did another tour in the Army. Vietnam, too. I have nothing against anyone who could get out of Vietnam, but I did believe (and still do) that able-bodied men and boys should serve their country. Now, with no draft, they slip into drugs, drunkenness and crime.
