Grandmother 20081115

I had an email from my sister Fri. It was very short and to the point. Our paternal grandmother died during the night and she was passing on the news. Like my parents, I was not very close to her, so I don't feel compelled to cancel this trip and fly there. I did joke with my "boss" that I needed to do it, just to fraak her out. She has been stressed about the trip and rounding up some of my time for it for weeks. She was stunned and understanding, but her relief was not noticeable when I explained that I wasn't seriously considering it. One day soon I might want to go visit there, but not at the expense of this trip.

Dolly is already making plans or us to visit her half brother in December and her father for new years, so I don't know when that would be.

When my maternal grandmother died a few years ago, I went for that funeral because I wanted to be there for it, for my mother, and for the family. This grandmother, not so much.

I ordered flowers for her yesterday afternoon. It was kind of strange coming up with something to put on the card, one because I never know what to put on cards but also because I'm one of those supposedly in mourning. It's going to have a "grandmother" ribbon on it.

I called one of my aunts Fri night to check in with her, because she lives close to the senior home. She told me some of her health history leading up to her death. She was 90 and it was starting to show. She couldn't take care of herself and she said she was ready to die. She, like my other grandmother, also had osteoporosis. Though she had health problems and was old, her death was still a surprse to some because mentally she was still as sharp as she always had been.

I'm only a little saddened by the news, because I really didn't have much contact with her. I remember when we went to see her, when I was there for my other grandmother's funeral, she wanted me to take the pictures Kitty because she didn't want/need them. Fine, we don't need to send them either.

She gave birth to thirteen children, but one died as an infant, so she ws the mother of twelve. My father is the oldest and the rest alternated sex from there with one set of twins toward the end. I liked her. She and my grandfather would come visit us in the winter when we lived in the south. She would cook some during those trips. One thing she made was different breads and cinnamon rolls. She was always encouraging me to eat, to get some skin on my bones. She was probably right about that because if I had a stockier build, bone density wouldn't be an issue now.

No. I just told you that I liked the way you wrote.

The "hmmm" was probably just that I don't think I got the same thing from this post as everyone else. Course, I might be mistaken...it was a while ago...

Hmmm...

One of the things I really like about is you is that in your blog posts, you don't really give a clear beginning, middle and end. You just say whatever is on your mind and leave it at that and allow us to make of it what we will.

Or maybe I missed the point entirely again.

I agree with Solitarie! It was a beautiful dedication.

Despite not being "close", this was a nice tribute to your grandmother. I have wonderful memories of mine.
