Yogiisms

It is the most famous tautology in the English
language:  “This is déjà vu all over
again.”  The speaker was Yogi Berra, the
most quotable person who never got past the eighth grade.  Aside from the wonderful things he said over
the years – referred to as Yogiisms – how could you not love a guy with a mug
like his?

There are a couple of other Yogi quotes that I find
particularly evocative:  “It ain’t over
till it’s over” is one of them.  The
other is:  “The future ain’t what it used
to be.”  There are others just as
meaningful:

“You can observe a lot by watching.”

“A nickel ain’t worth a dime today.”

Sometimes a person who gets quoted so often ends up
having different versions of something he said.  Here’s one example for Yogi:  Version 1. “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re
going, because you might not get there.”  Version 2.  “If you don’t know
where you’re going, you might wind up someplace else.”  I think the second version sounds more
accurately Yogi.

Some other Yogiisms to ponder and appreciate:

“Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true.”

“Nobody goes there anymore; it’s too crowded.”

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

“If the fans don’t come out to the ballpark, you can’t
stop them.”

And finally:  “I
didn’t really say everything I said.”

There must be more than one yogi around the place --most of these i have heard before --he must have contacted Australia some time
That version two if you dont know where your going, you might wind up somewhere else ,, sounds a bit like what i call a cooks tour --in other words lost --- Cooks were a large travel agency in England

Kind of existential, eh?

Even though he dropped out before high school, he is Dr. Yogi Berra thanks to an honorary doctorate from Montclair State. Even if you rooted for the other team, it's hard not to love Yogi.

Change is good, spesshully if it's quarters and fifty-cent pieces.

We can only hope that Yogi has a good one saved up for when he passes into Yankee heaven.

You know that deal where someone is asked who they'd like to have lunch with? Forget Jesus Christ or Mother Theresa, I'd pick Yogi Berra every time.

You could try to convince Yogi that Jackie Robinson really WAS safe that Series when he stole home.

Actually, the future ISN'T what it used to be when at least some of it was predictable and draconian changes did not descend practically overnight. You can live three technological lifetimes in one these days, whereas in our great grandfather's day entire generations did not see massive change.

"The future isn't what it used to be" is one of Yogi's most accurate maxims!
