It's official--and worse than I thought. Although today's headline read "America's religious landscape in flux", the article said otherwise.
True, church attendance has slightly declined. And people are exploring other denominations. But the numbers of believers vs. nonbelievers remain fairly constant. Eight in ten consider themselves Christians (78.4%), 16.1% are "unaffiliated with any particular religion", and 5% belong to other faiths.
Of the unaffiliated, a significant number consider themselves "religious". ONLY 2.4% are agnostics, and a puny 1.4% atheists. Guess which group I belong in? Yep, the last one.
I don't feel like a minority. I don't stand out in a crowd. My atheism is not "out there". But, like being gay or black, I can't help it. It's who I am.
I have my reasons and theories as to why "believers" form the majority. And I have expressed my side of the coin in my recent essay entitled, "Where Goeth Reason?" If anybody is interested in reading it, email me at jazzman@geetel.net. I'll attach the essay to an email in return. I'm not out to convert anybody. And I'm not looking for a fight. You just might be curious as to what makes an atheist tick!
