Just Sayin'

So, I open up the morning paper, and there is Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan headlining the news. Koran (Quran) burning, insurgents bombing, etc. Oh yes, and "Muslim surveillance" in NYC.
And don't forget those nutty right-wingers spouting fanatical, Bible thumping, radical anti-Christian beliefs. Mormons vs. Catholics vs. Protestants vs. "heathens".

On and on and on. My bumper sticker says it all: "Imagine No Religion". Just sayin'.

Two days of grandson sitting went fine. It feels so good to be able to have a tot on my lap and to "rough house" with. Looking forward to the years ahead.

Advice/recommendations wanted:
I'm pondering whether to attend a "complimentary gourmet lunch" at Mountain Jack's just to attend a "retirement seminar" on "safe money places". I'm happy with where my money is now, but a free lunch! Or is there "no such thing"?
Yes, it's a "come on", but I'm no easy mark. The restaurant is 20' away, so distance isn't a problem. What do you think?

Have a good weekend. The usual for me--nothing happening. No blind dates, for sure!

Comments:

I created a blog elsewhere, but I haven't had the inspiration to write. Still training for the half marathon on Apr. 29. Doing a 10k Apr. 1. Got called for jury duty! Will find out Thurs afternoon if I have to show up there on Friday. Burnt down house got removed (yeah!), hole dug for new foundation. My "baby" DD turned 8 a few days ago. My dad is doing Chemo and will get a stem cell transplant in a few weeks. DS's science project earned him a spot in the city's competition in April! Yikes! Signed up for a long term health research project - a long questionnaire and an appointment to take measurements (20.8BMI and 26.4% body fat - I need to lose some of that!). And working 20.5 hours/week.

I get one of those "invitations" almost every week. They are either for investments opportunities or about long term care insurance. Retirees are easy pickings around here, I guess. I have never gone. I had friend who went to a weekend event selling time share cabins. They went for a ride out to the site and the driver wouldn't let them out of the car or take them back for two hours. Needless to say, they didn't buy.

I suppose they could lock the doors to prevent us from escaping. But, I've decided not to go anyway. Maybe next year!

My vote is no. Probably high pressure and will make you feel guilty about refusing.

I tossed the "invitation" in the wastebasket. I have better things to do. Besides, I usually eat a light lunch. I miss your posts. Are you somewhere else?

Hey Randy, I'm doing ok, just not great. My scoliosis is creating some problems for me but at 71 I guess that is to be expected. Sometimes I get depressed because I know it will never get any better....only worse. I still get up every day and go to work so I really should not complain since it keeps me moving. I get really frustrated with myself because I can't do things I used to do but I have lots of company in that area. Hey, I tried to find the video on ABC news about moving the house but had no luck. As soon as I learn how to post pictures on my MAC I will put one up of my grandson who is 6 months old now. I agree with you about having a lot to look
forward to when it comes to him. The great thing about grandchildren is when you get tired you can give them back to Mamma and Daddy!

I, too, have scoliosis. Back pain is standard, but I fight through it. I'm determined not to get old!

You know there is no such thing as a free lunch. Somehow, someway you will pay for it.
comment by gapeach on Feb 24, 2012 6:58 PM ()
You're probably right. Another vote. Everything good with you?

I wouldn't waste my time listening to some orchestrated biased spiel, no matter what food they were serving. I'm not swallowing any of it.

A vote against. Gottcha--and agree.

Can I sit on your lap.
Depending on the lunch. You do not have to commit to anything.I would say stay at home and have your own gormet lunch.

I'm leaning that way. Besides, I don't eat much lunch anyway. Plus, what they'll probably serve is bad for my health.

The free lunch reminds me of a timeshare we went to in Vegas once for extra gambling vouchers. I ended up wanting the timeshare...
The world is a scary place...

My neighbor Ken did the same. He signed up for one and has regretted it ever since!

Re. the gourmet lunch, if you can stand the hype and interminable sales pitch, go and enjoy the food. And you might meet some interesting people also attending. Ed and I went to one -- the food was good, though the portions were small. We ignored the talk. We don't plan on going to any more. Free food isn't enough of an incentive.

I like your bumper sticker. Be careful some evangelical fascist doesn't try to ram you.

Over the past two years of having the bumper sticker, I've only had two comments--one agreeing, one asking what it meant. One vote "for" going to the seminar.
