Founding Mothers

I read a pretty interesting book by Cokie Roberts last week about the women behind the men, the men being our "Founding Fathers".

Not much credit is given to Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, and so many others, for their contribution to our political heritage. They're rather ignored in American history text books. Dolly Madison and her flag is about the extent of it.

These "Founding Mothers" didn't so much try to influence their husbands (and some ladies weren't even married), but the public. They wrote letters, held rallies, and played important roles during the war with England.

I also realized that politics hasn't changed much in 235 years. The "two sides to every issue" was just as prevalent back then as now. And nastiness was the norm.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Quickly, my sister had an eye hemorage (sp?), I was bitten by a dog (again) while jogging (hip), and my Dad has been feeling "down and out" lately. Otherwise, everything else is okay. Oh yes, remember August 6th--Hiroshima Day.

I have never been attacked or bitten by a dog and I have interacted with many because I love them. I am surprised at the number of incidents.

About dogs, several neighbors' dogs run free and poop on lawns. Ed gnashes teeth and threatens to call animal control, but he doesn't. None of them, however, even when they bark, are less than puppy friendly, even the older ones. They all love to get petted. I see many dog walkers who do use their leashes (and carry plastic bags for the poop) -- all their dogs are friendly too. There are two small dogs (not lhasas nor pekes nor shitzus) who bark incessantly when anyone goes by. That's the worst they do because their owners never had them trained out of it. I blame the owners always.

It seems every one of my neighbors has at least one dog. Most run free. Many bark incessantly. Without exception, the owners of the dogs (4 now) that have bitten me have said, "He/she has never done that before". It's in dogs' genes to bark and attack. No more dogs for me.

I have read other books that said Abigail Adams was very intelligent and
had a lot of influence on her husband.

My sympathy to you and your family. I saw a woman out walking today who
carried a cane in front of her for dog swatting purposes no doubt. It
wasn't practical since the dog catcher is super vigilant but maybe she had
an encounter in the past.

My sister carries a spatula, and my neighbor swings a golf club! Country folks just think it's alright to allow their dogs run loose (I used to). Excuse? Protection. Not good for runners. And yes, Abagail was very intelligent and influential (to a degree--she couldn't keep John at home).

Ouch! Another dog bite? How terrible! I'd be afraid to jog ever again- around your house anyway!

See my other replies regarding the severity, etc. I really think he was "playing". He's pretty frisky. His electronic fence was not working (according to the owner). Hasn't worked in a month! It better be turned on now.

I complained to my neighbor--therein lies the problem. He's my neighbor! I don't want to cause ill-will.

I understand where tealstar is coming from but as usual many innocent people were killed or affected by stupid leaders decisions---talking about the Japanese leaders just as many innocent people have been killed since that day--and yet leaders never learn!
How's your sister's eye, your hip and your dad's depression???

War games will never cease. Peace will never occur. Human beings are just plain rotten. Sister's eye needs time to clear up the blood before anything can be done. See my comments to others re dog bite. Dad just getting old and tired of living, I think. That's not like him, so I worry. Thanks for asking.

How bad was the bite?

Luckily, he didn't penetrate skin. But the marks and bruises are visible.

I have a cane DH used for a few years while he had sciatica. It makes me feel safer when out and about.

I find it difficult to jog with anything in hand or pocket. That's the problem.

I'm not for mass murder, but Japan was militant about never surrendering and fighting till every last American was killed. I don't lose a lot of sleep over Truman's decision.

I was reminded of this day when I read a Studs Terkel book about death and religion. A survivor was telling her story of Hiroshima. Touching. Still, I agree, we had to do it. I don't think modern Japanese hold it against us.
