I flipped over to the Country Music Award show the other night, just out of curiosity. I have a few comments, and I'll try not to offend anybody.
There were a lot of "good ol' boys" dressed in jeans and cowboy hats. The gals were pretty and sexy looking. They all tried to act serious, yet fun loving. Reba and Dolly are good examples of country style women (in my opinion).
I didn't last too long watching the show. Except for bluegrass (fast and jazzy), I don't much care for country music. Like early rock and roll, it's too 3 chord repetitive-- variations on a theme with a 7th thrown in there every once and awhile. Plus, I don't like the quality of the singing--twangy and nasal. But, that's just me.
I grew up in a musical family, listening to jazz and classical music as a kid. Being exposed to that kind of music shapes one's later tastes. I'm not a snob about it. It's just that country music is a "meat and potatoes" type of music--simple music for simple people (not simple minded, mind you). It's plebeian, not patrician, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I only wish more people could hear "finer" music: Benny Goodman swing, Dave Brubeck romp, Duke Ellington soar, Ella Fitzgerald wing it. But you'll never see an awards show featuring jazz or classical music. It's a vicious cycle: people aren't exposed to it, so they aren't familiar with it. Therefore, it's never on TV and never will gain an appreciable audience. As always, the masses rule. That's the way it is.
