Christmas Eve Story

I've read several "remembrance" posts, so here's mine on Christmas Eve day.

I was about 7 when Santa came for a visit. I was living in South Bend where there's snow all winter long. My twin sisters and I were sent off to bed to await his arrival.

When my parents woke us up (as if we were ever asleep), we looked out the window to see Santa walking down the street toward our house with a huge sack over his shoulder.

He stopped in front of our house, set down his sack, took a notebook out of his pocket, looked up at the address, back down, up and down again several times. "This is the house, Santa, we are the Smith kids!!", we hollered.

Santa put away the list, shrugged his shoulders, picked up the sack and trudged on! We were devastated. My Dad said it was probably because we were bad sometime during the year. No way! We were perfect angels. Well, I was pretty adept at teasing my sisters, but that's all.

Wait, Santa Clause is turning around!! He's made a mistake! After much consternation, he came into our house.
I can never forget some of the toys he pulled out of that bag, one being an airplane. I wonder what ever became of that treasured toy?

It wasn't until I was an adult that my parents finally revealed the man behind the beard. My grandfather! Turns out he used to pull that same trick on his children. He was quite the pranster, and we loved "Pappy" greatly. "Mammy" was wonderful also (she lived to 100).

So here's my official MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS, etc. to all my friends at MyBloggers. And thanks Eddie, for providing us with this format to express our lives and thoughts. May peace be with all of you.
