I just finished a terrific book called China Road, by Rob Gifford (from NPR). I highly recommend it.
The author travels West along China's route 312 starting in Shanghai via bus, truck, taxi, thumb, etc. Along the way, he meets all sorts of people, rich and poor, executives to farmers/laborers.
He writes about the people, their culture and history. He comments on geography and climate. He speaks to where the Chinese have been and are going--the difficulty in blending their heritage with communism.
Gifford ponders what the future holds for China. This is a fascinating journey into the soul of China, one which gives me a far better understanding of who these people are and what this country is about.
The book is easy and fun to read. It's not written by some professor. I learned more about China in one week than I learned in my whole lifetime. "Inquiring minds want to know".
