So much for our European friends doing the right thing. I just read that EU nations (27) have failed to agree on a ban on fishing blue-fin tuna.
As you probably know, stocks of threatened blue-fin have dwindled for years, being ferociously hunted in the Mediterranean (for sushi dishes).
This is another "here we go again" situations where, in this case, tuna's precarious status has driven up prices and prompted fishermen to fish illegally, sidestepping stringent quotas. A temporary ban is needed until the stocks have recovered. It ain't a-gonna happen soon.
Yet again, mankind rears its ugly head. Time after time, case after case, our mindset is "if I don't get it, somebody else will." Look how close we came to wiping out the American bison. I wonder who cut down the last tree on Easter Island? Who shot the last free passenger pigeon?
And people wonder why we have laws to protect endangered species--just another example of socialism, eh?
I like tuna and sardines and salmon. They're good for me. But I have problems justifying eating them at the risk of aiding and abetting their demise and possible extinction.
Stay tuned (or should I say "stay tuna-ed"?).
