Life, Death, and the Art of Parenting

I know that this might be a tad morose for an early morning blog, but I felt like writing about it anyway. As I was watching the news this morning, talking about the death of actor Patrick Swayze it got me thinking. Here is an individual who knew he had a lethal disease that would in the end take his life, yet instead of dwelling on his end he chose to fight it with every fiber in his being. His courage and dignity right up to the end is an inspiration to all that knew him, and those who only knew him through his body of work. My own outlook on death is very simple, I know someday I will die..it's a given. But I will not make it easy for the grim reaper to get me, I will go out swinging. I know the thought is now, "how can he say that not knowing when, or how he will die". Well I know that in my heart the person I am, and what I have and how much it's worth to me. Just like Patrick Swayze..he had more then material goods in his life that were far more precious to him then anyone could imagine. I believe it was this that kept him going, looking for any avenue to give him more time with those people he cherished. I look at my children and I wonder about their futures, and I worry if I am preparing them fully for what they will encounter when they go out on their own. I believe as a parent you can only teach your children so much, and have faith that they will make the right decisions when the situations come up. But I hope that when I am no longer in their lives, and they have children of their own they will be able to pass along a part of what I have given them.
