I Can Do That!

The dog days of summer are upon us.  We have forecast temperatures for the next seven days from 95 to 100.  I guess all good things must come to an end.
I am back in Oklahoma now with tons of work to do.  I came home to find Kenna sick with a virus.  She was in bed all weekend, so I tackled the laundry first.  I don't think we had a clean towel left in the house.
While I was gone,  Grandson had problems with the lawnmover and couldn't get it to run properly, so the yard was a jungle with all the rain that Oklahoma had.
I got it out, cleaned the air filter, added some oil because it was nearly out, and shot some WD40 on the engine and the rope mechanism.  Now, it's purring again.
Sometimes, I wonder about my kids and grandkids.  They have absolutely no concept of how to fix anything or even what the problem might be.
I have always been a "can-do" person.  I believe I "can do" anything.  There are, of course, things that I do have to give up on and call the handyman; but not before I try to solve the problem myself first.
Kenna is always commenting on how handy I am to have around because I can fix a lot of minor problems that she would not even attempt.
Grandson is also working this summer at his first job.  He is a counselor for "Play In The Park," a prorgram offered through the city's Parks and Recreation Department for kids 7 to 12.  The program runs from 8 each morning until 1 in the afternoon.
Since Kenna works for that department, she was able to help him get the job.  We want him to put the money in savings to help buy his first car; he wants to spend  it on an X-Box 360 and new games because his old one quit working.  I hope he will see our wisdom in the end, but kids can't see beyond today, so we'll see.
More later; I must get to it!

we live in a use it throw away society nowadays ----costs of repairs just about as much as new item ---lift the bonnet od car --once you could see the engine ,,nowadays you have to search for it

You are so right about repairing something costing as much as buying a new one. I just bought a new lawn edger rather than spend $100 to fix my old one.

I think younger people are so accustomed to things being run by circuit boards instead of mechanical systems, they don't even consider trying to fix them.

That and the fact that they never had to work growing up. They were spoiled, and I am as guilty as the rest in not making my children learn to do more things for themselves.

You sound like a woman after my own heart. I will tackle anything too. Young people often just have no problem solving skills... or maybe it is easier not to try... after all, you will return and "fix" it!

We single women soon learn to "do it ourselves" if we want to survive. My kids need to realize I won't be around forever to fix things for them.

Oh!thought that you were doing one of the song from Chorus Line.
"I Can Do That. That is the message there

It's the same principle!

Ed fixes a lot of things around here and is proud of himself for saving money. It just takes longer for him to get to the project than I like. I am reasonably handy with self-styled remedies that can sometimes drive him nuts. Hey, I say, it's working ain't it? My Greek-born mom fixed a lot of things, including the wiring. Go figure.

I have to admit I don't tackle problems with wiring, although I have been known to hang ceiling fans.

Why should he do anything--they know Mom, Grandma will/can fix anything--that's what happens to 'can do' people

We have had over 40 days of '90+ feels like 100+' days since June 1 and have broken may records the past few days--not to foget the humdity--but I love it remembering the many, more than normal vey cold days I was complaining about in January and February!!!

It is what happens to "can do" people. Everyone waits on them to solve the problem; and I certainly do not want one complaint from you about the hot weather after all the carrying on you did last winter about how cold it was.

I don't know why younger people don't have the can do spirit. I have
learned a lot of can do fixes over the years. My famous one is the black electricians tape and aluminum foil when you get a hole in a drain pipe.
hey...it works.

It's amazing what one can fix with a roll of black tape and a can of WD40.
