Staying the Course

I read a statement shortly after Obama was elected by a woman on the other website stating that she would NEVER vote for any candidate who supported abortion...my own son-in-law says essentially the same thing...that he cannot support a Democrat because of his moral convictions.
Let me just state this:  I don't give a flying flip how a candidate feels about abortion, legalized liquor, legalized drugs, legalized gambling,  or any other moral issue.  Why?   Because it doesn't matter one whit whether these are legal or illegal.  People who want an abortion will have one; people who want to drink will drink; people who want to do drugs will do drugs, people who want to gamble will gamble.
What I am concerned with is the candidate's position on business, social and military issues...NOT MORAL ISSUES!
I want big business regulated because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I want society's social problems addressed; in spite of what Republicans would have us believe, we do need Social Security, Medicare, national health care  and welfare programs.  Think of the pitiful state of people in countries without these programs.

I want people to take advantage of the many government grants and loans now available to go back to school to get retrained for jobs of the 21st Century and to quit lamenting and waiting for the "assembly line" jobs of the past to magically reappear.  It just isn't going to happen.
I want our free trade agreements repealed and tariffs reinstated to stop the bleeding of outsourcing and importing.

I want people to quit believing those idiots who say global warming doesn't exist and to join in a worldwide effort to create green energy, green jobs, and a "green" mentality.

I want us to stop worrying about who rules Afghanistan and concentrate on protecting our borders.  In other words, bring our boys and girls home ASAP!

I want our military presence in terrorist regions to be lean and mean--to strike quickly and to get out just as quickly.

I want a modern high-speed rail system like Europe's to get people from place to place without burning fuel like it is paper.

I want American automobiles superior to and cheaper than foreign automakers.
Do you know who else wants these things?  Obama!
However, in order to have them,  the government must spend money....lots of money.
But, in the end, for those smart enough to look beyond their noses and wise enough to quit listening to the Republican naysayers and the pundits on television and in the press, these things will pay huge dividends in terms of jobs as well as ultimately getting the deficit back under control and reducing it.
There's an old saying that applies to government just as it does to business.  "In order to make money, one must spend money!"
People!  Wake up!  Quit listening to those who are misleading you with their claims of how bad off we are and put your faith back in the people who will start the wheels turning to fix these problems.
Give this man time!  Stay the course with him!  If you were one of those who voted Republican, tell your representatives you DON'T want them sitting on their arses voting "NO" in an effort to oust Obama in 2012; you elected them to improve things;  not to create gridlock.
Yes, to bring our country into the 21st Century costs money; but the dividends in twenty years will be life-changing for the next generation....and they WILL NOT BE BURDENED WITH HUGE DEBT.  That is another myth the Republicans want to perpetrate. With a strong, progressive economy and a peaceful military presence comes huge national debt reduction.

Don't know what i found more intriguing- the post or your comments. You define gay rights as a human rights issue, not a moral issue. Very well said! Kudos! The gay people I have known are very moral people so I never believed it was about morality, but downright prejudice. But that is only one point, and I will not write a comment as long as a post except to say that I knew there was a reason why I like you!

Of course, the gay rights issue is all based on prejudice and complete failure to follow Christ's commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. Sadly, the most guilty are the so-called "holier than thou" Christians who reveal either that they are total hypocrites or that they don't have a clue what the Bible says. Even sadder still is the fact that many of them are ministers who stand up and preach this prejudice from the pulpit. My only consolation is that ministers are warned that they will be judged more harshly than others. I can't wait til Judgement Day to see them squirm when Christ calls them to task for failing to love ALL his children--he will remind them rather harshly, I think, that he did not limit love for his children to white, protestant, heterosexuals. Thank you, incidentally, for the nice compliment.

I often say that because I am not an American, I feel funny commenting on American politic blogs. But I do want to say that this was so well-worded, clear and to the point. Good for you.p.s. I often think that "moral issues" are used as a distraction ploy by the opposition. If people are thinking about abortion and drugs, they don't pay attention to the real issues.Kudos to you for using your brain.

Thank you so much for the nice words about my post. And you are absolutely correct. Politicians use moral issues as smoke screens to divert people's attention away from the important topics that need attention.

Nothing to add.But will go along with this.
Of course will not be around in twenty years.
Yes,also sick of tired hearing about moral conviction.
I do not care what they do,so as long that it does not bother me.
The President will be fine.He will start the New Year with a solid hit.
We have to stand by him.Good post.

Thanks, Fredo! I won't be around in twenty years either, but, in all probability, my children and grandchildren will. This is the world I want for them.

Great post but I do care how the candidates vote on moral issues because laws that reach into our homes may be avoided by the well-to-do but not by the poor. We can'tlet regressive religious positions take us back to the 15th century. And rich or poor, gay people cannot provide for each other legally, inherit. There is the position that they can do so by carefully planning. Oh, sheesh, heterosexual couples do not "carefully plan" and they have a legal failsafe. Why shouldn't gay people have the same protection?
comment by tealstar on Nov 9, 2010 6:57 AM ()
They should. My point is that a pro-abortion, a pro-gay rights candidate or a pro anything candidate should not be the reason people vote against him. As you know, I am a Christian, but I also strongly believe that moral issues should be kept out of politics. The rights of gays is NOT a moral issue; it is a human rights issue and falls under my concern for how a candidate addresses the social issues of the United States.

I believe whole-heartedly in your statements. You can't legislate
morality and it takes lots of time and money to get and keep social
programs in place. We need universal health care. We are a rich nation
and we give billions in foreign aid. I am all for protecting our own
people first. I am aware that it sounds reactionary but let's keep
our noses out of other peoples business and get on with peace and
prosperity for us. Our boys need to come home.

The one thing that would help our national debt more than anything is to quit trying to police the world and take care of business at home. Think of the good we could do with all that money spent on Iraq and Afghanistan when special forces could slip in behind lines and accomplish much the same thing. That doesn't even take into consideration the most expensive aspect of war--the loss of our future leaders and citizens.

That's because we use the brain that God gave us rather than letting others do our thinking.

I just want to know how 'they' are going to cut taxes and lower the trillions owned and keep the roads in decent shape, etc., forget the 'social' problems they want to cut??????????????
comment by greatmartin on Nov 8, 2010 7:21 PM ()
It's a pipe dream; but they manage to convince people they can do it. Common sense should tell them that it is completely impossible.
