Bubbly That Will Break the Bank

There are tons of articles about affordable sparkling wine floating around this time of year.

But what if "affordable" isn't what you're looking for? What if you have a whole ton of cash that you need to get rid of — fast? (We're looking at you, 1920s bootleggers!)

That's where the world's most expensive sparkling wines come in. If you want to ring in the new year with a little debt or are just really, stinking rich, we've got the list for you.
Dom Perignon 1966
From the winery that claims the name of the monk who popularized Champagne is a bottle of 1966 vintage Champagne (a favorite year for many wine lovers), which can be found in a private cellar in Belgium.
If you want to try to buy a bottle of this bubbly off the Belgian owner, it will cost you (at last check) $1,965.
Louis Roederer Cristal
Before it was the beverage of choice for hip-hop icons, Cristal was made for the Russian royal family in the late 19th century.
The tsar at the time, Alexander II, was constantly under the threat of assassination.
In order to make sure he could safely continue to consume Champagne, Cristal made its bottles from clear lead crystal (hence the name) rather than the typical green glass.
That way bombs or poisons would not go undetected. A standard bottle of this historic potable will run you a mere couple hundred dollars.
Real high rollers will opt for the Cristal Brut 1990 Methuselah (a six-liter bottle), which is valued at over $17,500.
1928 Krug
When it was last auctioned on its 80th birthday, this vintage of Krug sold for $21,000 at the Acker Merral & Condit auction in Hong Kong.
The economy has only gotten better since then, so we're guessing the price hasn't gone down.
Piper Heidsieck 1907
Veuve Clicquot's shipwreck Champagne has yet to go to auction, but it's not the only sunken sipper out there.
Two thousand bottles of Piper Heisieck 1907 vintage were recovered from a sunken ship in 1998.
The ship had been transporting the wine from Finland to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia in 1916 when the boat was struck by a German torpedo.
The bottles were well preserved by the cool temperature and darkness of their undersea cellar.
The value of one of these bottles is close to $275,000, making it the most expensive Champagne in the world.

I started to get a bottle of Champagne but they did not have any bitters
to make a champagne cocktail which is my favorite way to have it. l drop
of angostura bitters and one sugar cube.

To celebrate the big 2000, Ed and I splurged on a $40 bottle of champagne and an ounce of Beluga caviar ($100 and change). Ed, the consummate entertainer, instructed me on serving the caviar, the garnishes, etc. We invited our favorite neighbors. It was lovely, but I don't remember that I was that much more pleased with the Veuve Clique we drank that night than I would have been with a $15 or so bottle of Korbel Brut. Would $1,000 or more for that undersea stuff really blow your palate?

Wouldn't blow mine, but then I'm no connoisseur of fine wines.

I just settle for a lovely, affordable bottle of Prosecco! [clink!]

Absolutely. Besides, California bubbly is better now than the best of the French, and the French know it. LOL. Bottoms up!

Just give me some nice cheap pink champagne, and I'll be happy.

They're all a bit out of my price range too.

I don't know if I'll ever get to taste any of these high-end bubblies. Maybe when our ship comes in.

That's a lot of money to spend on a bottle of wine. I don't think I would be able to uncork and drink it if I paid that kind of money for it. I'd just have to keep it and admire it each New Year's Eve!!

I don't know that I would want to waste my money on champagne, even if I had it to waste.
