Behind the Wheel

I’m going to try my hardest not to kill anyone with a vehicle. Or, you know, just crash it in general. Collisions are undesirable. I don’t have a car, but next week I’ll be getting my license if all goes well. That said, I’m not the best driver in the world, heck, I’ve made so many mistakes it’s a wonder I’m still standing here today. What exactly are these mistakes, you ask? Well, I’ll tell you. So far I’ve…

* Stopped in the middle of a 4-way intersection during rush hour traffic
* Nearly backed into a pond
* Driven over a curb TWICE
* Driven on a one way street going the wrong way
* Nearly backed over my dad's foot
* Killed a chipmunk

I’d like to say I’ve improved. But really, would you be comfortable in your car knowing I was driving? I didn’t think so. Oh and getting yelled at while my dad's in the passenger seat doesn't help either. He jokes about me being as bad a driver as my mom, but I don't think he realizes how much it hurts my feelings.

Also, in all honesty, the mishap that most bothered me would have to be the squashing of the poor, helpless chipmunk. Yes, the other incidents put me and others in serious danger, but I got a second chance and I learned from my mistakes. But that chipmunk I killed didn’t get the chance to do such a thing. The poor thing darted into the road and it just happened so fast. And whose fault was this? My fault. It was all my fault. I am a chipmunk murderer.

So, for those of you that drive, tell me in the comments about your worst experience on the road. If you’re not yet street legal, you can just tell me what you dread most about getting behind the wheel. Also, have you ever hit any animals? Did you feel like a terrible, awful person afterwards? I’m pretty sure I’ll eventually get sued. Woo.

For all I know I could've hit one of these guys. Whoopsies.

I've had my share of hits and near-misses. One time driving a rental car in Pennsylvania I almost ran over Punxsutawney Phil - this big groundhog trying to cross the road in front of me. No thumps, so I think he just hunched down in the traffic lane and the middle of the car passed right over him. Don't feel bad about that chipmunk, plenty more where he came from.

Punxsutawney Phil -- cute name for a ground hog. I'm sure he was glad you missed him with your rental car.

oh sister we all have those bad experiences. Why did you stop in the middle of rush hour traffic? I would h ave been cursing you out.
I have hit a deer. It was an AWFUL awful experience and I don't even like to think about it... but I have also run into the garage and a drive through window wall and all sorts of other things... just be careful!!!

I stopped in the middle of traffic because my dad confused me -- he kept yelling "turn this way! No, not that way!",so I broke down crying in the middle of traffic. I got it together pretty quickly though once I realized how foolish and childish I was acting.
Wow, hitting a deer must be so scary. I'm glad you were okay!

its illegal here to swerve to miss an animal ---------yeah as if
years back i was waiting at a roundabout intersection during rush hour , a policeman was directing traffic , i was first car to go across when directed through. next thing i knew was a thump on my door --the policeman saying to me --if i didn't mind could i please move -- he had stopped all other traffic and walked over to me

At first I thought you were going to say you accidentally bumped the cop with your car. My dad doesn't swerve for any animal he see's on the road, he'll head straight for them.

When I attended a driver training course I was told that the peak age for driving alertness and reflexes was 18. I was 29 at the time.

*I scraped the side of hubby's Bronco backing out of our driveway.
*I murdered a squirrel, on a highway, with my M-I-L as a witness.
*It took me three tries to get my license in a one horse town.
*I almost backed over the neighbour's two year old daughter.
*I slid through a stop sign plus more two blocks trying to stop my car on snow.
*I slid on black ice and rolled the Bronco to the edge of a cliff with my three year old, one year old and unborn babies.

and everyone wonders why I dislike driving.

PS: No one suffered any physical injuries except for the squirrel and I really don't think he suffered at all.

Wow, your list puts things in perspective for me. Just...WOW! Glad you weren't injured though!

As you get experience, you will get better. We have so many squirrels in my neighborhood and they will start moving away from the car and then change their minds and run right into where I'm driving. You would not believe how many times I have slammed on brakes to keep from hitting one of them. Probably the dummiest thing I've done was mess up the spoiler on my car....my daughter-in-law called me crying hysterically one day because her kitten had died and I turned to sharp going out of my driveway and messed up the spoiler when I ran over the curb. I have been in two wrecks but both were the other persons fault, thank goodness.

I know that experience will help, but driving still is a bit overwhelming right now -- glad that your two accidents weren't your fault.
