Checkered Cake

Okay, so yesterday was my sister's boyfriend's 22nd birthday and being creative and daring I decided I was going to make a cake for his birthday.

AND THE ONE I DECIDED ON WAS A CHECKERED CAKE!!!

Now I was determined to get this cake right and spent hours on it...

More or less.

Anyway!

So I made the cake and it came out pretty damn good I have to admit. The frosting was a little too sweet, but--eh--its frosting, what do you expect?

So to start off with, I searched the internet and found one that mentioned when stacking cakes that you should try and keep the recipes for the cakes at the same amount and weight so they don't fall apart.

I then spent another 15 minutes on the floor of my local supermarket looking for cakes with almost the same amount of ingredients. I came down to Super Moist Yellow and Super Moist Chocolate Fudge as my two choices.

Of course, I'm not a big time baker so I'm stuck with one round pan to make these two cakes. I made the Chocolate Fudge one first and went on to my Yellow next.

This is when it got crazy...

I chilled the Chocolate Fudge and snatched up my mom's handy Cake Leveler and cut off a good chunk off the top of the cake giving it a sweet flat surface for the next layer. I proceeded to do this with the Yellow cake as well.

After they were done being leveled, I wanted to make sure chunks wouldn't fall off, so I put them into the fridge and let them chill a little longer.

When they were done, I went and grabbed a glass bowl and a smaller glad bowl and cut into the cakes, getting my layers and swapped the middle cut out. Difficult it was! At this point I decided to get the kit next time. :P

Then came my favorite part! I pulled out my tips and frosting and after placing the first layer on top of the other layer I frosted it up in Vanilla frosting. As soon as the cake was white I decorated it to my fancy, drawing a guitar, music notes(two smilies) and Happy B-Day Ricky.

This is the cake!!

This shows the inside of the checkered cake part.
