Finally! July 25 is less than 24 hours away. The date we have had circled on the calendar for months. The date that has kept my sanity in check more often than once.
Vacation.
Such a simple word. Sometimes it means time off work, staying at home and doing things you need to do but don't have time when the working world holds you hostage.
It can be a week or even one day. I've had vacation time that was only an hour in my "quiet zone"!
Sometimes it means getting away from your comfort zone, looking at different scenery, enjoying some time away from the every day world.
We take a lot with us. Clothes. Family. Necessary stuff. We usually bring home more than we took. More stuff, but most importantly...memories.
I have a photo album for each vacation trip over the years. I love to look at the ones when my children were little and watched as they discovered the wonders of the beach or the majesty of the mountains. I can watch my children grow up through these photo albums.
Time marches on and changes occur. I got out the last one before Amy came to be in our family. She saw the girls as they played on the beach and made sand castles. She saw the pics from the zoo when we fed the giraffes. She looked at the man who would be her husband as he sat with my Hubby on the beach chairs looking out at the shrimping boats on the horizon. I had to show her something she didn't see. It was his need for someone to share these times with! She gets misty-eyed and hugs me. No, Amy...it is I who thank you for making family vacation time complete.
This is the third time she has been on vacation with us. I hope we have many more together!
Vacation time means building more than a castle on the sand that will be washed away by the tide. It means building memories than only become sweeter as time goes on.
Now if you will excuse me, I've got some packing to do. Where did I put that sunscreen and the cord for the laptop and the battery charger for my Blackberry and the book I've been saving for that quiet time on the balcony???? Oh well...they will all show up.
Checkin' out for a while, but will be checkin' in!
