This is a Christmas tradition...Mamaw's candy! Everyone hopes to get a plate with an assortment of candy made in her kitchen. She just puts in a little extra love in each piece.
Since her heart attack in April she has just not been up to full speed. She was a little down-in-the-mouth (Southern for "sad") because her stamina was not up to a full day of candy making.
Here's where the fun came in! I called the Grand girls and their Mom and suggested we take over Mamaw's kitchen and help her make candy. This would accomplish two goals: she would have her candy to give out PLUS we would learn how to make those wonderful morsels.
We made peanut butter balls, Martha Washington candy, divinity and haystacks. Mamaw was the supervisor and we did all the work and cleaned up the mess.
I like to think we made more than candy in that little kitchen today. My grandgirls go to spend the day with their Great-grandmother and learn how to carry on a tradition of candy making at Christmas.
We are not promised tomorrow. In April I wasn't sure Mamaw would be here to celebrate this wonderful time of year with us. Each day is a treasure, each visit with her is a gift.
I hope today will be etched in the memory of three little girls two little girls and one teenager as they made candy and giggled and licked chocolate from their fingers.
