Ties That Bind ...

My Daddy wore ties.  He was of the generation that believed a man was not properly dressed if he didn't have on a tie with a dress shirt for any occasion other than being at home with his family.  He had ties of every color, pattern and width you could imagine.  Occasionally my Mom would go through the closet and choose a few that he had not worn in ten years or so and give them to the Goodwill.
He had skinny ties, wide ties, loud ties and soft solid colored ones.  His idea was if a certain type of tie was not in style at the moment, just keep it hanging in the closet until its time came around again. He was right!  He even owned a bow tie that he wore with a tux for those really special occasions when he looked so handsome I thought he could have been a movie star.  He was certainly my bright, shinning star!
One day after he died moved out of his Earthly body my brothers and I were going through some of the boxes of "stuff" at his house.   I opened one and there were all those ties!  Some of them I remembered, some I did not.
After Mom died went to Heaven he just put all those boxes in an empty room in the big ole barn of a house and left them alone.  We felt like we had gone back in a time capsule when going through all those boxes of stuff.  The box of ties were mine.  I didn't know what I would do with them, but they were not going to be thrown away.
I remember one day I was helping Daddy get ready for some special occasion (probably a birthday party or church social or a little girl's tea party) and he asked me if his tie was straight. I looked him square in the eye and announced, "Yes Sir, your tie is straight...it's your head that is crooked!".  We both laughed till we hurt over a dumb joke.  That's something I loved about him. He laughed at my dumb jokes!  I miss that laugh.
Hubby's Mom asked me if she could have a few of the ties for a project she had in mind.  She then told me she wanted to make each of my grand daughters (the Three Princesses) a quilt from those ties.  What a concept! Those old ties would be cut and sewed together to make a memory quilt!  The middle girl was named after my Daddy because my daughter thought he was the perfect example of what a real man was.  She loved her own Dad, but Papaw was something special.
Today I saw the first finished quilt. It is quite amazing.  She has the other two pieced together and will beging the task of quilting them next week. She hand quilts, not on a sewing machine.
When they are all finished, I will post a picture. In the meantime, I will think of those ties that once were tied by my Daddy's hands as he got all "spiffied" up for a special occasion.  I hope the girls will stay warm and snuggly beneath those quilts and remember the man who was such a good husband, Daddy, and Papaw.  His legacy will live on in a hand pieced quilt made by their great-grandmother.  Earthly treasures of precious memories.
Mz Scarlett...a very blessed lady, indeed!
