About Hearts ...

Happy Valentine's Day to all my MyBloggers Friends!
This is the day you spend money on flowers that will fade and be thrown away or candy that will live forever on hips and abdominal areas.  A rose that ususally costs $1.99 will sell for $10.00 today. I won't even mention a dozen roses! What's wrong with this picture? Commercialism.  Making a buck. Suckering in men/women who try to express/impress their love to someone with material things.
I don't mean to be sounding mean or morbid or bitter. I've been on the receiving end of such items for many years.
Several years ago I told Hubby not to buy flowers for me unless they could be planted in the ground and enjoyed for  more than 2 -3 days. He has built a lovely flower garden for me and I enjoy it all Spring, Summer and even into Fall.  I told him I didn't like the candy that comes in those heart shaped boxes so he stopped buying them. (Usually our children would eat the candy!) Instead, he will surprise me with a bag of Jelly Bellies on a "non-valentine" day and I love it!
This year he gave me a gift that many of you will find strange. That's OK. We are a little strange ourselves.  He got my little Beetle detailed! I don't mean just a 'wash and wax'...oh no!! It looks better than when I first put the key in the ignition and drove off the sales lot.  The leather seats are soft and supple.  There is no longer food items stuck in the floor mats.  The windows have virtually disappeared and I can see where I'm going.  I am thrilled beyond words...and have told him so. (I got him a Pittsburg Steelers Super Bowl shirt and cap. He, too was thrilled!)
He will bring a single rose or a handful of wild flowers to me when I least expect it.  That is so sweet and special.  Sometimes I find a card tucked into my work bag that reminds me of his love and to encourage me to have a good day. That, too, is sweet and special.
Valentine's Day is a day that reminds me of hearts in another way.  I do all I can to keep mine healthy (well, maybe except the jelly bellies!).
My heart has been broken, but then along came someone to help mend it.
My heart has been swelled with pride and filled with humbleness.
My heart has been given in love and promised to one man in front of God, the preacher and a crowd of wittnesses.
My heart has felt the stab of a knife as a 'friend' proved to be otherwise.  The scars remind me to be careful of whom I trust.
But, I've never left my heart in San Francisco.
I have listened to hearts as they "lub-dub" the last time and the person slips off to eternity. I have listened to the newborn baby's heart as it beat wildly upon the start of the adventure of life.
Hearts are an amazing muscle.  It just sits there in the middle of your chest bringing in blood from the body, sending it throught the lungs for bright new oxygen and then out to the body again. Over and over and over again...all your life.  I loved the time I spend in the Coronary ICU.  I learned so much.
You can even take a heart from someone who has died and put it in someone who is sick and they get to enjoy years of being with family, friends and living again.  Amazing.
One of my favorite authors was Lewis Grizzard. He was a self-proclaimed "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God".  He could have you laughing and crying on the same page of one of his many books.  After he had heart surgery at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, he penned a book about the experience. The title is They Tore Out My Heart and Stomped That Sucker Flat.  I have all his books and a few are signed.  I recommend his writings.  If you are not Southern, you may need someone to explain things to you. I am available to translate.
Enough rambling. It's Saturday and I've got stuff to do while Hubby is at work.  I'll visit my brother, carry some quilting material to my Mother-In-Law, snoop through the yard sale just down the road and maybe give the spoiled chihuahuas a bath.
Wishing you happy hearts today and everyday!
Mz Scarlett...heart beating with the joy of life.
