Had my parents been alive last November I can tell you exactally how they would have voted. Mom would have proudly cast her ballot for the Republican candidate. My Daddy would have marched in with shoulders squared and voted for the Democratic candidate. It would not matter who was on the ticket...they voted for the party. Every time, every election...it was the same. Mom voted Republican, Daddy voted Democratic.
They would ask me if I voted but never for whom I cast my ballot. They learned a long time ago they had produced a daughter with a mind of her own and one who did not vote for a Donkey or Elephant but who looked at the person and what their platform promised. Somewhere in my gene pool is a bit of free-spirit, free-thinking and thankful to be an American DNA. Not a rebellious child, just one who was taught to think for herself!
Here's my letter to my new President:
Dear Mr. President:
Whether I voted for you or not does not matter. You were elected and therefore I support you and will proudly claim you as the leader of the greatest nation in the free world. If Mr. McCain had won, he would be getting the same letter.
What are you going to do about the hungry children? Not just hungry for food but hungry for education and the opportunity to make their own place in history?
What are you going to do for my neighbor who has been out of work for months and is living day by day? Are you going to create jobs or are you going to keep letting every thing I buy have the label proclaiming "Made in China"? We have the capability to be a self-supporting nation and not have the economic disaster of owing everyone in the world.
What are you going to do about my patients that come to our hospital for care yet are limited to what can be done because someone with the stroke of a pen decided how long they can be treated and the limit of their care? Take the pen out of the hands of the people sitting in ivory towers and let someone with medical knowledge call some of the shots. (Sorry about the pun there.) I am a nurse. Please don't tie my hands and try to limit the care I give to those who entrust me with their life.
What are you going to do about our military? Americans have always been on the forefront of liberty and preserving freedom. Are you going to keep sending them off to fight a war that cannot be won? Read your Bible and see if you can figure out just when this war started and read on to see when it will end. Sorry, but this one is out of your hands, Sir.
I'm not asking you to do anything for me. I am fine, thank you. I am asking you to do something about the future of three precious little girls that still have the innocense of childhood in their eyes. What will you do for them? They are my grand daughters and I care about their future.
You are standing on a new horizon. You are making history. I don't care about the color of your skin or your age. I care about what you will do with the job you have accepted. Are you willing to stand for what is right? Are you willing to shoulder the responsibility of your own actions? Will you be big enough to stoop down and listen to other people when they offer advice? Some of those people may have gray hair and years of wisdom stored up in their heads. Can you listen with an open mind?
May God help you. I hope you realize you are the President of a nation, but you are also a member of the human race.
I will pray for you. You need all the prayers of every faith and even the "good thoughts" of those who do not believe in a higher power.
Make us proud. Keep us free. Don't ever forget you are an AMERICAN.
Four years from now will I cast my vote for you or choose to vote for the opposing candidate? Only you can make that decision.
Sincerely,
Mz Scarlett from Georgia offering a glass of sweet iced tea to Mr. Obama, President of my U.S.A.
