Emergency Preparedness

Do you believe in Global Warming?  If you do, then you must believe that the weather will intensify, and the world will be hit by storms of increasing severity.  Are you prepared for that?
I've gone through phases where we put a lot of focus on preparing for disaster, but I have to admit, it's been a while.  We've kind of fallen short of the mark with all of our recent moves.  The bulk of our food storage is stored in Oregon, where it will not help us if we should happen to need it here.  So I'm speaking to myself as much as to you.
At the top of my list is to have water stored.  Just a reminder, you can survive much longer without food than you can without water, so if you do nothing else... put aside some jugs of water.  At least enough to get you through for 72 hours.  Two weeks of water for drinking and bare-bones basic hygiene would be even better.
With Hurricane Sandy we've seen that the Red Cross does not always get there in as timely a fashion as you might want or need.  Don't leave the essential requirements of your survival to other people.  Take charge of your own destiny, and add a little extra for loved ones or neighbors.
Every time I've been in a situation where we've lost power due to a storm or an earthquake, our friends and neighbors have come to us seeking refuge, knowing we'd be able to provide.  We had plenty of candles and blankets and food fixings. One of my daughter's favorite memories had to do with roasting marshmallows over a candle and telling stories.
It doesn't require that you go out and spend thousands of dollars at a whack.  Just, whenever you go shopping, buy a few extra things that are on sale.  One week you may buy two packages of toilet paper that are on sale. Another week, canned goods.  You get the idea.  Don't forget a source of light, heat, batteries, etc.
Where we used to live, we'd have storms and floods all the time.  People knew this.  Yet every time we'd get some weather, there'd be people dashing off to the stores, wiping them clean of supplies.  Don't wait for the rush.  Do it now!
And while you're at it, set aside a bible, just in case, even if you are not a religious person.  You know what they say, there are no deathbed atheists.

About 10 years ago the power went out here and it happened to hit 2 major water treatment stations, so water was shut off to a large area. It taught me to put aside drinking water, then washing water, then toilet-flushing water. A friend of mine used to fill her bathtub before a bad storm was expected.

That's a good idea. The washing mashine can also be filled, though I've never done it.

Good advice Maggie. I also think we should put valuable papers, credit
cards and a little cash in something easy to grab should evacuation be
necessary.

Great point!

I don't know about the last part, but I try to be prepared for "disasters". My downspout water barrels saved my garden during this summer's drought.

sounds like you were prepared!

great advice! I am going to be buying some battery operated lanterns, just in case. they say we could have a very snowy winter here. I am hoping that is true as I love the snow, plus I now have 4 wheel drive and I am itching to put it to use!

buying a vehicle that is up for whatever comes along can really give you peace of mind!

All summer in Colorado I pretended I was working on my evacuation and emergency kit, but while I watched the fire 30 miles north of us, I ignored the risk at my own house and put it off. The least I could do, even here in dry Las Vegas, is put together a better first aid kit in a plastic tub. And some water, as you suggest.

I'm sure you'll be glad you did, if only for peace of mind!

Having been through quite a few hurricanes in Florida I am always prepared--I have the water, canned food, hand operated can opener candles, batteries, flashlights, etc., but to be honest if I still lived in NYC I am sure I wouldn't have been prepared--and YES I believe in global warming which doesn't only mean hot weather and storms--it means many changes in the weather!

Yes, you are right. I forgot to mention extreme temperatures. Glad you are ready!

But you may be able to alleviate suffering for yourself and others.

Only a woman would think of stocking up on toilet paper! Biggest problem around here is water in the basement, so I have a gasoline pump in case the electric pumps can't run. The only thing I really need to do is get a few more gas cans. Had four before the garage fire and only replaced two. Of course, I could always poke a hole in the gas tank on the truck and get 25 gallons. A gen without fuel is useless...

Don't poke a hole in your tank!! They have a special syphon type pump you can buy at emergency supply stores. We used to have one for kerosene.
