Fun Times Had by All

We had another great weekend with the family at the lake... I truly love going up there! I remember when I was young my parents used to "make" me spend the summer up there... I was 13 14 and 15 I think when I hated it most. I used to hate it because my friends were all home having fun and getting into trouble over the summer, and I was always gone up there and missing out on everything... I really wish I could spend a summer up there now! Go figure. haha

I got a call from the brother that wasn't present (lives in WI) that his oldest son, D, who is 9, wants to become a vegetarian. I was so happy! I did ask my brother if it was ok to talk to D about it (my other brother S threatened to shorten my life if I talked about animals dying for food to my oldest nephew) and brother M said yes, that was why he called. I talked to my nephew and asked him why he was considering this. He said he didn't think it was right to kill animals just to eat them. YAY! I was so excited to hear that. I mean, he's 9, no idea if he'll stick with this, but just to know that he made the connection at 9??? He's sensitive and loves animals so when I last saw him in August I really wondered if some day he'd want to stop eating animals. It came, just sooner than I expected!

I have a vegetarian friend from high school that I have caught up with since high school and she has 3 vegetarian boys who love being veg heads. They were raised without meat and are strong strapping young men! I asked her for kid friendly recipes to send along to my brother...

I also reminded my mother that a family friends daughter went vegetarian when she was 10. At the time, I thought it was strange. Go figure again! haha Anywho, she's healthy as well, so we all know it is possible to thrive without meat, one doesn't wither and die like some people seem to believe.

Anywho - it was a great weekend overall. My oldest nephew is starting a new school this year, a Christian Academy, so I am curious to see how he likes it compared to public school... I told him I wanted a full report by the weekend. He said that since I am on facebook he'd let me know... haha

Wow I am babbling...

Happy Tuesday peeps!

That's pretty impressive that your 9 year-old nephew is interested in becoming a "veg-head", especially since so many children in society are clinically obese. I give your brother a lot of credit for being so open-minded. How long have you been a vegetarian? Or are you vegan?

Vegetarian and it's been about... 18 years? I love it. And I was ecstatic to hear the news about the nephew!

Nice that your younger nephew wants to be a veg head as you call it. Better that you have the green light to help him.
I just had to smile when you said, "when I was young". Kiddo, you still are young. I know what you meant though, when you were younger!! Keep up the good work with the nephews.

Hehe I don't feel "young" but I suppose ten years from now I will think I was!

Too bad that the lake put a crimp in your teenage life but now you are yearning for it. That is always the way. We didn't enjoy our lake house enough while we had it. I guess that is just human nature.

Isn't it funny how teenagers go through that time when they don't appreciate the family vacations, but later look back and it was all good.

yeah... I remember my mother telling me too that someday I would look back and be jealous I was able to spend so much time up there... and the time has come where I do wish I could do just that.

I agree that being vegetarian is healthy for everyone. I'm slowly becoming one myself... but my love of a certain meat product holds me back. And tofu just doesn't hold a candle to it.
I think it's great that your brother M is open to it for his son. That's fantastic!!!

I hope so! Maybe we'll just have to meet up in Vegas!
reply by sexysadie on Sept 7, 2010 7:33 PM ()

Cows have no fears from me. I gave them up about four years ago for health reasons. Sadly tofu and I also don't get along so well. I can have it once a week but more than that, I get hives on my arms and legs. I guess it's time to explore seitan and other wheat proteins. Rats, I also would have a hard time giving up fish.
Boohooo. I suck as a vegetarian.

oh trust me girl, I know tofu is something people really can't LOVE without knowing how to prep it so they'll like it.... And I am happy to hear you have cut back on meat. Although I'd love ya even if you ate a cow a day.

We STILL haven't gone on vacation yet this summer. I would love to spend a weekend at a cottage by a lake.
