Wednesday through Saturday was just hectic. The run up to Relay pretty much began on Monday last week and kept building and building until the actual Relay began on Friday.
The weather really was not cooperating at all last week and I had to finish building the easels for M’s collages of past events. On Tuesday and Wednesday we got about four and a half inches of rain on just those two days.
Because of all the rain we lost one of our apple trees. The ground was just so saturated with water that the roots just pulled up. Luckily I had moved the boat last weekend to the other side of the house so that the tree didn’t damage anything when it came down.
Thursday was mostly sunny so I finished the easels with some time to spare. Friday morning the guys all gathered at the church and loaded up all the stuff to make our campsite. By 10:30 we had it all up and all we needed were the finishing touches. By 4pm we were all gathered and rocking the chicken dinners. By about 8pm we had sold out of all the food and by dark most of the people from our team had left.
At midnight we broke down most of the big stuff like the tents and trucked those back to the church.
This year we had to have someone on the track walking all night long and next thing we knew, there were only three of us left from our team. That was M, myself and Miss Cathy, the team captain. We all took turns throughout the night walking and helping others clean up their sites.
Sometime in the night I was bitten by a spider on the back of my leg. Right now it’s all swollen up and looking nasty. I think I’ll go to the doctors office tomorrow and have it looked at.
Anyhow, we loaded up the last of the stuff and were headed on home by a little after 7am on Saturday morning. Then we tended to our various hurts and napped the rest of the day away. M picked up some blisters on her feet and I had one small blister plus the spider bite.
Overall, our county did awesome in raising money. All of the surrounding counties fell short of their goals this year. We had originally started out with a goal of $110,000 this year, but with the economy we revised that down to $104,000.
At the final count we had done just over $120,000!
I’m so proud of the work we did this year. Despite all of the hard times, our county really stepped it up and came through for the American Cancer Society. Our whole county only has about 60,000 people and the next county has about 300,000 people and came up short by nearly $60,000 of their goal. What can I say, We Rock!
More news later, I have to hit the bed. M rode the motorcycle into work this morning and ended up getting a really bad migraine headache so I drove into town and picked her up from work. So tomorrow I have to get up early and drive her into work so she can ride the bike back home when she gets out of work tomorrow.
