You wouldn’t believe the phone call I just got. Now to set this up I have to tell you that it is just after 11pm at night and I was just about to go to bed when the phone rang.
Since it was so late I thought that the only people who would call would have to be family, and with bad news too. My grandparents aren’t in the best of health so I thought something might have happened.
Instead I get this male voice asking me if I’m his father. What? I don’t think he ever said his name, but he said his mother’s name was Samantha. Now as far as I can remember I have never had a relationship with anyone named Samantha.
But this kid tells me that his mother gave him MY name as being his father. Where she got my name from, I have no idea. Don’t know how he got the phone number either, because I don’t list my first name in the phone book.
Now I should tell you that I believe that I may have a son. This was from a relationship I had over eighteen years ago. But the girl claimed that her boyfriend was the father (she cheated on him with me, yeah, I was not a good person back then) and I let it go at that. But a year or so later I met her and saw her son. I swear he looked just like I did as a kid. So I’ve always wondered if…
Well, anyway I tell this guy that I have no idea what he was talking about. Then I hear it in his voice. He says to me, “Please, I need to know if you are my father.†I can hear him pleading with me. This kid needs the truth and he thinks I have it for him.
So I asked him how old he was. He says that he’s fourteen. So I said, “Fourteen years ago would make it about 1994 or so, right? Well, I was in the Air Force stationed in Arizona at that time. Is your mother from Arizona?â€
He said “No.â€
So I told him that it was pretty unlikely that I could be his father. But I did talk with him for a minute or so afterwards and wished him the best of luck in finding his father.
What is so strange is I’ve been thinking about this possible son of mine quite a lot lately, and I’ve been seriously considering whether or not to pursue trying to find him and his mother. And this comes out of the blue…
Makes ya think, eh?
