Mad Men Season Premier ...

My "MAD MEN" Review - if you didn't see the premier Sunday, don't read this or I'll spoil it for you.

1. The hour and a half contained almost a full hour of boring listlessness.
2. The scenes with the baby were far too long and sleepy. Lose the baby.
3. Don Draper needs Five Hour Energy, except when his new wife has her halter off her shoulders.
4. Even for the 1960s, they all smoke too much in the office. I know because I did all this back then. I had Draper's job.
5. Overall I thought the sound was bad, characters mumbled too much and the racist thing was overdone.
6. How about at least ten minutes of action between commercials?
7. Martini glasses in the office were no good for visitors and clients. You disguised your gin or bourbon in coffee cups.
8. The clients were depicted as too dumb. Clients are NOT dumb. You always repeat that to yourself before you enter a meeting with them.
9. The set and costume work was great. Pastels, Danish furniture. Bang on.
10. Can't wait for Episode Two, Sunday night at 10 EDT. (AMC)

One addition - ad agency work was salaried. I was supposed to work a 40 hour week, but the weeks were more like 50 to sixty hours that included many weekends. The drinking grew with the hours.

I ended my agency career as a Creative Director, in charge of art directors, copywriters and lots of staff. Staff included assistants of all types from secretaries to layout artists and people who mounted up presentations for clients.

I have heard of this show but never seen it.

I like this show, but I hate the main character Don Draper. He reminds me of the early 60s era itself in some ways, being so removed and brusque.

His character has many faults, but we all share some of them. You never get to see him actually working, and that's what an A/D or Creative does, all of the time. No drawing boards in any of the offices, either, and that's a glaring absence.

I enjoy the clothes, hair, and set decoration on that show, plus the way the secretaries act, for example when Peggy started, every time she went into the Ladies Room someone was in there crying. I don't know if I get AMC or not, but I catch up via Netflix - not the most current season, though. I hope the writers don't get too full of themselves trying to be over the top.

This is a great show and yes we do have our flaws. The show was a hit.
Guess his new wife was the main character there that they wanted to see.
I loved this show as it brings back memories.Oh!well we all have different taste and stroke.

Despite my small satellite package, I CAN watch Madmen. I opt not to. No reason--just not into those kind of shows.

Do you ever miss the ad agency?

It nearly drove me to alcoholism, cause my first divorce and was the foundation of my depression.

I've never seen the show. No cable. So the hype is lost on me. One day, years from now, the reruns will be online. I can wait. But I hear ya about the ad agency world and the 60-plus-hour weeks. Twas ever thus.
