Abundance

We are covered up in squash and zucchini. Jalapenos peppers and cucumber abound. Tomatoes are ripening almost faster than I get out there to harvest them. Okra...strangely...nothing, nada, zip, zilch. Potatoes are doing well. My friends now groan when they see me coming with a Walmart bag in hand. They have already had their fill of squash and zucchini. I've been stingy with the peppers since we discovered a recipe for stuffed jalapenos. We might make salsa next, since we're getting so many tomatoes. I'm not a big sliced tomato fan. Jennifer has become quite creative about cooking up squash and zucchini, but our friends and family eat out so much, we're not whittling down our stockpile. I haven't frozen any of it yet, because I was told it doesn't fry up very well afterward.
My life is blessed. We have to work hard, but we're content. Sofia has brought so much joy and happiness into our lives. I'm still amazed at how much she has changed us. I cannot predict the future, but I think she will be a noble child with a kind heart. Glimmers of her personality shine through.
Next week, our Kid's Crusade begins at church. Monday - Friday, 7pm-9pm. Five nights of children's activities, prizes, games, stories and puppet shows. The underprivileged children of our neighborhood absolutely love it and we're happy we can provide a spot of wholesome entertainment and instruction in a fun-filled atmosphere. We're working with a great team of hard-working folks who will make it a success. Jennifer has been the mastermind behind most of the programming and creative work. Every year, while we're gearing up for it, we both say we're paying someone to come in and do it for us next year. Every year, after it's over, we both say, when we do this again next year we can....followed by a string of new ideas and possibilities. I doubt if we ever pay anyone to do it for us. LOL
Sofia seems to like red bell peppers! She's also eating carrots and squash and zucchini from our own garden.

Funny, but I didn't plant any of your "big 3"--okra, zucs, hot peppers. I get them all from my daughter, if necessary. Love the photo!!!

I plant what I call the "feel good" veggies. They're almost indestructible, so that even a novice like myself can feel pride and satisfaction in growing them!

Sophie is beautiful!
Use those tomatoes to make your own canned pasta sauce and chili. It doesn't save much money but it is fun, you can give it to friends and it always tastes better than store-bought. They have just never learned how to make good tasting sauces!

*said in a hushed whisper* I love to can! There's such a feeling of satisfaction in it and it's a connection to the past.

Some of them are pitiful, really.

P.S. It isn't hot enough for Okra but soon will be.

Well, I'll certainly not be sending any okra to Teal. I think we know where she stands on that issue.

Okra.

Try Zucchini soup. It is tremendously good. I can't get Ted to eat it but
tomatoes are just about his only vegetable. Sofia is starting off right as
she is already eating vegetables.

I'm gonna look for that zucchini soup recipe. Sounds delicious.

Oh, move next door to me and bring zucchini and tomatoes! Every day I peer encouragingly at my 1 1/2 inch infant zucchini. Last year we had trouble with some kind of end rot on the fruits, but I think I figured out I need to add lime to the soil.

Good luck! I'm still befuddled by "how does your garden grow". What flourishes in one spot only languishes in another. Go figure. I'm more hit and miss in my approach.

'Five nights of children's activities, prizes,games"--how about the prizes be squash and zucchini? Let the kids play 'spin the zucchini' Give each a 'goodie' bag of vegetables Have a tomato 'war'--kids love to get messy--we have a whole town, Dania, that has a tomato fight once a year--you can hire a 'dunk tank' and they can use the tomatoes to hit the bell and see YOU fall into a mess of tomatoes--I have a thousand more ideas if you want them--No?

I think we'll stick with candy and toys. We'll give squash and zucchini to the parents!!
