Queer Cinema

The LGBTQ Center at my school had a movie night where students sat and watched a variety of gay and lesbian films. I was reluctant to go mainly because most of the movies in this genre are pretty bad, but I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did!

First of all, I have to explain that while growing up, most of my closest friends have been of the straight variety, so I'm slowly having to learn through this group that sexuality isn't just straight or gay, there are a lot of variations! There are three students in my LGBTQ group who identify as "other", meaning they don't identify as straight, gay, or bisexual. One of the girls identifies as asexual, another as pansexual, and one guy identifies as transgender. I didn't know until recently that he (Xavier) was transgendered - sort of slipped into a conversation when I (wrongly) used the slang "tranny" while talking about someone I had seen in public. It was meant as a joke, but of course he took it the wrong way. I apologized.

Anyway, back to the film's we watched. So far, we have watched 2 films; MILK and the second SHELTER. These were both phenomenal films in my opinion.

For those who don't know, MILK is a bio-pic about Harvey Milk. In the 70s, he was the second openly gay person to be elected to public office throughout the country and the first openly gay man elected anywhere. He fought vigorously for gay rights until he was murdered by Dan White (who also killed the mayor of SF George Moscone at the same time).

The film does a pretty good job of showing the personal and private life of Mr. Milk, and shows how he did extraordinary things to help the LGBT community, which is still true today. Without Harvey Milk and others like him, today's gay people wouldn't have half as many rights as we do nor the feeling that we can accomplish great things. It was so much like a history lesson in gay life - really, really great! Oh and the acting was amazing. I'm a huge James Franco fan so I was like 'SWEET!' when I saw him in the movie playing Harvey Milk (Sean Penn's) boyfriend. So cool.

Now, the second film we watched was SHELTER - this movie rocked! I can't say enough good things about it. The film was special in that it portrayed a normal, healthy gay relationship without all the stereotypical stuff that you usually see in gay themed movies. The relationships between the characters is great. I really got caught up in it. The two main characters were so believable - I almost forgot I was watching a movie! The actors were so good. It was about respect, love, romance, passion, and building a long term relationship with each other. Something I someday want for myself - so many other films don't show this option. For me, it is important that gay teens have a movie like SHELTER that they can watch and realize that two men or two women can have a loving life together. That there are happy endings for us too. It is a film all people can identify with, regardless of their sexual orientation.

I wanted to show previews for both movies but decided some of the scenes might be a little too much for some people. Both movies are rated R, but don't let that stop you from seeing them. They're both so good.

I would definitely recommend at least watching MILK...it's an amazing movie for everyone to see, irregardless of your person sexuality. Harvey Milk was a fascinating man.

You will find us a group that does not shock easily. We find cruelty and
brutality and war shocking but not sex. I would not presume to tell
anyone how or who to love. I am glad you have this group support and so
pleased that you saw two great films.

Thanks for that!
It is nice being able to post without worrying about being shot down for being me. I've tried writing on other blogging networks and I always ended up blocking comments...too many stupid, homophobic people. So thanks for the support!

It is used by young people who don't know the history of the word, including the professionals.

I haven't seen shelter, but it definitely sounds really good. I will have to see if I can get a chance to see it.

I thought that Milk was wonderfully done, too. There was a great documentary of Harvey Milk that you should try to see, too, though the movie really captures the documentary well. I understand that it was a source for the writer. It was called The Times of Harvey Milk. I would suspect that your school's library would have it in the collection.

I think that it is great that they show the films like this. I wish my school had done that.

I will definitely try to watch the documentary film on Harvey Milk.
You really need to watch Shelter - it is short (only around an hour long), but is totally worth checking out. I'd love to know what you think of it.

I'm just curious--where did the title come from?

Like Xavier not liking the word you said many older Gay men and women don't like the Q word--I know the whole theory about taking 'ownership' of the word but we never can--it was used to kill Mathew Shepard and, yes, Harvey Milk--it is still the most used word to express hate against Gay people and yelled at them when they are being bashed, bully and killed.
I do understand you are all young and have a lot to learn but, sadly, most of you have no idea of your history--of Gay people like Larry Kramer or James Baldwin or John Rechy--ask how many in the group know of them and what they accomplished besides making it possible for your group to meet.
I'm not picking on you and I am more than glad there is a LBGT group but they have to understand why many older Gay people hate the Q word--to many of us it is like using the N word to a Black man by a white man and though they may use it among themselves they don't use it among Non-Blacks.

End of my 'rant'
comment by greatmartin on Sept 22, 2012 5:15 PM ()
That wasn't a "rant" and I appreciate you educating me on the word.
I know that it had some negative connotations in the past, but I guess I wasn't aware that it still did with some people in the LGBT community.

Martin, that is pretty much what films focusing the GLBTQQ community are referred to in the professional literature now. Queer isn't just used to take back the power of hate speech, but it is also a term tha tis unifying as it can be used to refer to everyone in the alphabet soup of alternafolk.

Both of these movies were great. With Milk the better of the two.Sean Penn did a terrific acting job on playing Milk and glad that you saw this. They have been around for some time.
Shock there was nothing to be shocked about and you would have been fine.
Martin did a terrific job on reviewing Milk.Glad that you had a chance to see this and there is more about him .They have a documentary film on him.Milk was the best one there.
comment by fredo on Sept 22, 2012 3:51 PM ()
I agree that Milk was definitely the better of the two. The movie deserved all the awards it got - including one for Sean Penn's acting. Shelter is definitely a personal favorite of mine though. I'm learning that there are so many great LGBTQ movies out there to watch.
