So what did you do last night? You know what I did? I stood out in the middle of a theater parking lot in the city of Willimantic, CT at 11 p.m. and drank Don Julio tequila out of a paper cup with my wife and three friends. Don Julio is an incredibly good tequila. In a bar, you can expect to pay eight dollars a shot for it. It sells for about $100 a liter.
And there we were, Thayer, Sara-Ann, Ommbutu, Mary Ellen and I, all standing around a half gallon of the stuff, drinking it out of paper cups. Our ages ranged from twenty-four to sixty, and we were all laughing, enjoying each other's company and getting caught up in the glow of the liquid warmth that slid down our throats and caused a mild eruption of heat in our stomachs.
There was not a salt shaker, a lemon, nor an ice cube in sight. You don't need those "training wheels" when you're drinking the really good stuff.
What, you might ask, was an "old man" like me doing in such a situation?
Well, the latest show I'm directing had it's opening night last night, and the three-week run was kicked off with a standing ovation! So we wanted to celebrate.
The expensive alcohol in question came from Mary Ellen and I. Actually, we had just given it as a thank-you gift to my Production Stage Manager, Oombutu (a.k.a. Chris).Â
The motley parking lot crew was made of five people. Thayer, (who is an actor in the show. Incidently, he is also a good friend of novelist Wally Lamb, and is the hero in Wally's first novel, She's Come Undone), Sara-Ann, who is a wonderful actor also, but, this time around, she is working as the back stage manager, Oombutu, Mary Ellen and myself.
After the show, Chris decided that he wanted to share the wonderful tequila. So, before we went up to The Main Street Pub to join the rest of the cast and crew in the opening night celebration, the five of us had our own private celebration in the parking lot.
Sometimes, it's good to be young again. Especially at the age of 55.
