Good Guys and Guns

Okay. I'm pretty damned sure that what I am about to say is going to piss off more than a few people. But that's never stopped me before.
Soooo . . .
For years we have been hearing slogans from the NRA such as, "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." This slogan implies that we good guys need guns to protect ourselves against the bad guys who have guns.
Well, first of all, I don't remember any proposed legislation anywhere in The United States that bans ALL firearms.
And, secondly, in at least one of the three publicized fatal shootings that took place this week, that premise proved to be false. Fatally false.
In the Las Vegas killings, all three victims were carrying firearms. The two police officers were ambushed while they were eating lunch in a pizza house.
The third victim died in a Walmart parking lot. He drew his weapon and approached one of the shooters. He was then shot in the back of the head by the second shooter.
The irony in the killings of last week is that the only shooter who was subdued by a potential victim was an unarmed man in Seattle who sprayed a can of pepper spray in the shooter's face.
The armed citizen in Las Vegas who approached a shooter was shot dead.

You're not offending me at all. Personally I think all guns, unless granted with a permit for cause, should be outlawed. My position is extreme, but you've got to admit that the incidents of loonies out there solving their problems by killing is growing.

The crazies are out there because it is too expensive to put them
away and a crazy person with a gun is all that it takes for someone to lose
a life. I don't think our culture values life enough. We are not teaching
kids that death is final and irrevocable. Kids should not be raised with a
sense of entitlement. I personally hate guns and don't know how to use one. I detest hunting. Hunting should only be for food. I see no pleasure in killing be it man or beast.

You're right to point out that the circumstances of shootings should be examined to see just what's happened in all recent instances. People on both sides of gun control issues should want this. In Texas in the Charles Whitman tower incident, and the Luby's shooting at a McDonalds, the public acted to change carrying laws because it took so long to end each incident that many more died. That may have been an apt response AT THE TIME. Now, solutions will be far more complicated because of what you've mentioned: Armed people are still dying. I think mental health care has got to figure in heavily.
