My Week with Marilyn--a Review
left;">The movie "My Week With Marilyn" is sort
of how she herself was perceived--wanting of love but not knowing how
to get it. No one has or will ever be able to figure Monroe out though
many have tried.
Though Meryl Streep won the Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher I think Michelle Williams
has the advantage of not being as well known so she sort of disappears
into the role and gives the essence of MM if not the woman herself. She
emits the glow that Monroe gave out when she was 'on'.
Monroe is seen through the eyes of a 23 year old man, Colin Clark, played by Eddie Redmayne, who was the third assistant director on the movie she made with Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in England and newly married to Arthur Miller, the playwright played by Dougray Scott. Why Branagh received an Oscar nomination doesn't make sense as he is in no way
strong in his dislike for Monroe the person or admiration of her as a
movie star.
Colin
Clark wrote two books about Monroe and had a hand in the screenplay
with Adrian Hodges. It states at the beginning that this is a true story
but you wonder if it is Clark's or Hollywood's truth. There are a lot
of behind the scenes lines that, unless you are familiar with the life
of Monroe and Olivier, will be lost on the average audience.
The best performance is by Judi Drench as Sybil Thorndike while Julia Ormond is a pale imitation of Vivien Leigh. Toby Jones is wasted and Dominic
Cooper is no whereas strong as Milton Greene had to be. The rest of the
cast, like the directing by Simon Curtiss, is serviceable.
"My Week With Marilyn" is an interesting film while watching it but forgettable as soon as you leave the theatre.
