George Clooney is one of the actors whose movies I will always go to see because I
like him as an actor and the persona he puts across . In the movie, "The
American", George plays Jack, Edward and Mr. Butterfly, all the same person. The movie opens with a beautiful women stretched
out on a bed in all her glorious nakedness after just having had sex
with George and then within 5 minutes he kills three people.
All this is followed by a scene with George Clooney doing exercises showing off a still good body. There is a car and
scooter chase through narrow streets going up and down hills in a small
Italian village. Later on he is having sex with a prostitute, played by
Violante Placido, followed
by seeing his naked upper back and butt while getting dressed and she
stands in front of the camera in full frontal nudity. By the way George
performs oral sex on her. Did I mention that he has a job constructing a
rifle for another beautiful woman, Thekla Reuten, not knowing why she wants it?
George
is on screen 99% of the time only there is no animation in his
performance. He plays a dour, almost sad, puzzled man with no background
provided for him. Most of the time the director, Anton Corbijn, a former photographer, shoots Clooney mainly in close ups and whether you think he is handsome or not,
whether you lust for, or love, him almost 95 minutes of his face on
screen is a bit too much. Also Corbijn seems to love long distant shots of a car traveling in the hills of Italy with about 5 too many.
Beautiful nude women, chases, people being killed makes this sound like an exciting adventure film but folks it isn't! Watching Clooney construct the rifle for a lot of the film is like watching paint dry.
What action there is, aside from the sex scenes, might add up to 15
minutes or so it seems.
Just in
case you might think I have been misleading you let me shout that THIS
IS ONE OF THE MOST BORING FILMS I HAVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME! Yes I will
go to see his next movie but I wish I had skipped this one and you
should.
