The Rise of the Planet of the Apes Review

The
one main thing I got from "The Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" is that I
really want to see the original "Planet Of The Apes" again as I haven't
seen it since it was first released and I forget what Caesar's role was
in it.

Here we watch Caesar (computer created by imagery of actor Andy Serkis)
from the day he is born until he leads the rising. By the way that is
NOT a spoiler because if you don't know/see that is where the story is
going you are too young to be in the auditorium!

Will Rodman, played by James Franco, is responsible for raising Caesar and also for taking care of his father, played by John Lithgow, who has Alzheimer's,
and Will, a scientist, is experimenting with a new drug for the company
he works with, which after seeing the effect on Caesar uses on his
father.  Both the father and the chimp grow stronger and smarter while
Will meets and eventually marries Caroline (Freida Pinto) who also cares
for Caesar.

There are
three main villians in 'Rising' including Will's boss, David Oyelowo
(Steven Jacobs) and two animal caretakers, (Tom Felton and David
Hewlett) who don't start their nastiness until about an hour into the
movie. Before that, watching Caesar grow up and react with adults and
his surroundings, the film is sort of light and funny and then turns
ugly even including a famous line from the first film uttered by
Charlton Heston.

The last section
of the movie is a lot of violence, computer generated mayhem, with the
apes taking control of the world one city at a time, as shown in the
ending credits.

I really don't see what all the hullabaloo
is about regarding James Franco as he doesn't impress me at all except
for the fact that he doesn't have that 5 o'clock shadow most young
actors wear today.

"The
Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" is, mostly, a fun movie for the first
hour and the imagery of the apes has come so far from the first film in
1969 that your interest is held in the last 50 minutes. The main purpose
it seems to serve is to get you back to the original film and,
possibly, start a whole new franchise again.

This one is actually a remake not of the original, which was done a couple of years ago by Danny Elfman, but of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, which was set in 2001. In the previous film in the original series, Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and his wife had been sent back in time. They end up being hunted down and killed after initially becoming celebrities, but their deaths did not happen before his wife gave birth. That little baby is Caesar. This sort of creates a time paradox because he brings about the rise of the apes that will evolve into controlling the planet in the future where his parents are from.
It sounds like they are skipping all of that back story and just making him genetically engineered.
