Blu, a baby bird, is taken out of the jungle by smugglers and becomes a pet in Minnesota. It is because of smugglers that Blu is one of the two remaining macaws in his subspecies and years later is being returned to the institute in Rio de Janeiro to be mated with Jewel his female counterpart. They get bird-napped and the chases start with one not so minor problem being Blu's inability to fly. We travel through the streets, beaches and skies of
Rio accompanied by samba music. It's Carnival time and we have Sergio Mendes's music, colorful costumes, sparkling floats and, being in Rio, we have to see all sides of Christ the Redeemer statue.
The picture is certainly colorful with birds of all shapes and sizes with some Busby Berkely dance sequences and a toucan along with a bulldog, canary and cardinal helping Blu and Jewel get away from human smugglers and their nasty cockatoo, Nigel, and his army of marmosets.
Aside from the love story of Blu and Jewel there is the human story between Blu's owner Linda and Jewel's owner Tulio, who runs the Rio institute.
Along
with all the glitter, color, Copacabana beach, music and Carnival, the
story lightly touches on slums and the smugglers but nothing to scare
the kids.
"Blu" is aimed at the kids but will entertain the adults enough that they won't squirm in their seats.
The voices are those of Anne Hathaway (Jewel), Jesse Eisneberg (Blu), Jemaine Clement (Nigel the cockatoo), Blu's owner Linda (Leslie Mann), Jewel's owner Tulio (Rodrigo Santoro) along with George Lopez, Jamie Foxx, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, Wanda Sykes and Jane Lynch.
