Old Heidelberg---a Restaurant Review

It being Wednesday, lunch time and my having a car I told Allen to get into the car and, without telling him where we
were going, I headed to my old neighborhood, where I lived 13 years
ago, and eventually drove up and parked in the rear of the Old
Heidelberg Restaurant
. I hadn't been there in a number
of years but ti was time to have something different--no cheeseburger
today--and I had found a 'buy 1 get 1 free' coupon in the paper.
The
entrance is in the rear and as soon as you walk in you feel the
'oldness, we have been here for a while, welcome back feel' to the
place. It was a lot larger than I remembered, with a lot more 'things'
on the walls, ceilings and surroundings
, but still had that 'homey' feeling .

We were seated in a booth and was almost immediately approached by the server, who was one of those young, always smiling, too cute waitresses , who took our drink order with
Allen having iced tea ($2) and me coffee ($2). Looking over the menu I
saw right aw2ay what I wanted and that was the Bavarian Mixed Platter, a
variety of sausages, served with mashed potato, sauerkraut and red
cabbage ($7.95) while Allen went for the Spiessbraten, stuffed Pork
Roast, served with mash potato and red cabage ($8.95).

A
basket of home made bread was served and not too long after our dishes
came. I was very happy with mine as I knew what to expect but Allen was
disappointed with his as I think he expected something like  a stuffed
pork chop while his dish was more of a sliced meat loaf with the
'stuffing' just mixed in. He didn't say whether he liked it or not but
he did clean his plate!

For dessert we shared an apple strudel with a scoop of ice cream on top. We did eat it too fast for me to take a picture of it!

With
a $6 tip the lunch cost us $10 each, was good and something different,
which is always nice. The service was fine though, sometimes, the
goody-goody attitude can be a bit too much but then again a lot better
than a surly attitude!

I do like German food, especially sausages, but it makes for a 'heavy' lunch so it won't become an every week stop.

I love German sausages.... but you are right... it is not a light meal.

I love sausage and mashed potato, but not at the same time! But for ten bucks, it sounds like you had a good time and a good meal!
