I love Julia Roberts! I love her long legs. I love her Rita Hayworth (kids, if you don't know who RH is watch a movie called "Gilda") hair. I
love her smile that lights up the movie house and the movie-goers. Put
her in a comedy and you smile all the way through.
Tom Hanks is good at playing 'everyman', or a nebbish, but sometimes he overplays that Forrest Gump bit. He produced, directed and co-wrote, with Nia Vardalos of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" fame and co-stars opposite Julia Roberts.
Somewhere things went wrong. You keep on waiting for the comedy to
start, not to mention some chemistry between the leads.
The film starts with Hanks having a mid-life crisis while
Julia has a husband who stays home and watches porn while she drinks
and teaches at a community college. They don't even meet 'cute' as Hanks
becomes a student in her class to get a degree. The film doesn't seem
to know which direction to go in, whether to be a romantic comedy or a
serious look at people losing their jobs, walking away from their
mortgages and other problems they are having in today's economy.
When
Hanks and Roberts have their first 'get together' scene it is fairly
embarrassing. And yet--Roberts gives that smile and you don't care that
though this has a serviceable script it isn't really a good movie.
With the exception of Gugu Mbatha-Raw
who has an outrageous funny line explaining why she could never be
interested in Hanks and has a fun personality along with Wilmer Valderrama, who is a cutie, the rest of the supporting cast are a major disappointment. Cedric the Entertainer doesn't entertain, George Takei hams it up and while good to see Pam Grier her role is a waste.
This film is worth seeing if you are a Roberts and/or Hanks fan and to get some of that smile from the former.
