Hiv 'Cure'? Another Gay Man Killed, More

  • Stem cell transplant cures man of HIV

Doctors claim Timothy Ray Brown, who received stem cell transplants as a part of his leukemia treatment, has been cured of HIV. NAM’s website explained how he was healed:

The man received bone marrow from a donor who had natural
resistance to HIV infection; this was due to a genetic profile which led
to the CCR5 co-receptor being absent from his cells. The most common
variety of HIV uses CCR5 as its ‘docking station’, attaching to it in
order to enter and infect CD4 cells, and people with this mutation are
almost completely protected against infection.

The process was grueling, however, as the man relapsed twice,
underwent two stem cell transplants and suffered from neurological
disorders as well. This is a fantastic development, however. I still
believe that our generation will see a cure for HIV.

  • Houston man stabbed to death outside gayborhood club

Last Friday, a Houston man was stabbed outside of Club Blur, a popular club in the Montrose, Houston’s gayborhood. The victim, Aaron Scheerhorn, was chased by his attacker after being
stabbed once. When they arrived in front of the club, Scheerhorn was
stabbed repeatedly in front of a crowd of patrons. Scheerhorn’s
sexuality is unknown, as are the reasons behind the attack. According to
the Houston Chronicle, the suspect is still at large and is described
as a “tall, black man between the ages of 25 and 30. He’s between 6 and
6½ feet tall and weighs about 200 to 225 pounds. He has short hair and
was wearing a fitted orange or burgundy sweater with dark pants and
dress shoes at the time of the slaying, police said.”

  • NYC man sentenced to eight years in jail for attacking gay man

Daniel Aleman was sentenced after pleading guilty robbery as a hate crime in the October 2009 brutally violent attack of a NYC gay man.
Aleman, along with accomplice Daniel Rodriguez, attacked and robbed the
victim while hurling anti-gay slurs at the man. The poor victim
suffered in a hospital for three weeks with a broken jaw, several broken
ribs, two collapsed lungs and a lacerated spleen. Rodriguez faces
sentencing in January.

Eight years seems tame when this is what they did to the poor guy:

It’s a harsh image to look at, but at least some justice has been served.

  • James Franco watched a male gigolo in action

In raise-your-eyebrow news, James Franco, during his appearance on Inside the Actor’s Studio, talked about watching a male prostitute “at work” to prepare for a film role. I’ve heard of actors who have gone all out for there art, but this definitely takes the cake.
I’m not sure the Academy knows what it’s in for with letting him take the mic all night at this year’s Oscars.

  • Joel Burns is a finalist for Texan of the Year

Joel Burns, who
made headlines for his impassioned, inspiring and all around amazing It
Gets Better speech at a Fort Worth City Council meeting, is a finalist
for the Dallas Morning News’ Texan of the year
. Definitely, definitely a well-deserved nomination. Finger crossed for his win!

That is pretty impressive medical news. I wonder if it might lead to some wider range treatment....
