Hair--review of the Touring Company

It was the age of Aquarius and the sexual revolution and the time of 'make
love, not war'. It was hippies and daisies in the barrels guns and
hallucinogenic trips along with 'be-ins', marching to D.C. and being
gassed, running away to Canada and burning draft cards. It was "Hair"
with rock music and nudity and it was 1967. Now we have a revival with
the infectious music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics and a book by Gerome
Ragni & James Radd with direction by Diane Paulus and athletic
choreography by Karole Armitage, both using every part of the stage and
most of the orchestra section of the theatre. With a cast of 30 and an
orchestra of 12 that is a lot of people making everything looking so
easy.

"Hair" is a plea to "Let The
Sunshine In" and change the world by changing one's self. "Hair" is
about drugs, ("Hashish"), sex, ("Black Boys" and "White Boys"). a black
president, ("Colored Spade"),about looking for "Donna" and 35 other
songs touching on every aspect of a young life, their energies,
vulnerabilities and puzzlement's of life. It is about going off to war
and struggling and balance. It's about every generations against society
and not wanting to be like their parents.

We
follow Claude (Paris Remillard). a young man from Flushing, New York
who prefers to be from Manchester, England, and has received a letter to
report to his draft board. He turns to his tribe for help consisting of
people like Berger (Steel Burkhardt) who has been kicked out of high
school and Sheila (Caren Lyn Tackett) who loves Berger and is loved by
Claude. There is Hud (Darius Nichols) a militant African-American,
Jeanie (Kacie Sheik) pregnant, in love with Claude who is not the father
of the baby and Woof (Matt deAngelis) who is hung up on Mick Jagger and
would go to bed with him though he isn't gay. After Claude goes on a
drug trip he decides he wants to be invisible and disappears only to
return and be completely invisible to his tribe with a new look.

All
the cast performs with energy, dancing and singing, entertaining and
involving the audience to the point that it is one big love feast ending
with the cast inviting the audience to come on stage to join them in
the encore of "Let The Sunshine In" and before you know it there isn't
an empty spot on stage. It would be remiss not to mention Josh Lamon's
star making turn taking the audience completely by surprise in one of
his character roles.

There was a slight
sound problem during the first act making a lot of the song lyrics
almost incomprehensible that was solved by the second act but even with
that the love in won the audience over. The tribe of 2011 young adults
takes the audience back to the 1960s when things were a lot more
shocking and in your face but always holding a flower in their hand.

First
act: 1 hour and 13 minutes  Intermission: 20 minutes  Second act: 52
minutes (plus audience on stage)  Total time: 2 hours and 35 minutes

Strob lights and smoke.

Continuing tour dates: Miami May 31-June 5, Fort Lauderdale June 7-19, Orlando June 21- 26

2011-2012
season at Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami: The Addams Family, Shrek The
Musical, Million Dollar Quartet, Twyla Tharp's Come Fly With Me and
Disney's The Lion King

You must have sent vibes out that made me suddenly, the other night, take out my ipod to listen to old Cowsills songs... including the song "Hair." I've never seen the musical, but I'd like to.
