The Debt

"The Debt" is based on a 2007 Israeli film about 3 Mossad agents in 1967 after a Nazi 'doctor of death'. The daughter of two of them has written a best seller about them 30 years later which is responsible for a twist which questions truths versus lies and if 'the truth will set you free'.

Jessica Chastain, who I saw two weeks ago giving a star making turn in the film "The Help", plays the young Rachel Singer and Helen Mirren the older Rachel. As part of the trio Marton Csokas is the young Stephan,Tom Wilkinson the same character 30 years later, with Sam Worthington, as David the young  man celebrating his 29th birthday that fateful evening and at the age of 59 is played by  Ciaran Hinds.

All 6 actors acquit themselves as the pros they are. It is always a pleasure just to watch Mirren and seeing Chastain on the verge of stardom, if not already reaching it, can be exciting.

Personally the fact that the young men in the movie don't walk around with a 5 o'clock shadow is a plus in itself and we even watch the young Rachel shave the doctor of death, played by Jesper Christensen, with a straight razor. Sadly for me we also have to watch the young Rachel
vomit but are at least spared having to watch her urinating!

"The
Debt" is a thriller that is just not thrilling enough, a soap opera
with not enough soap and just one too many 'artistic' scenes by the
director John Madden.

It is not a bad film as any film with Mirren is good just for having her in it and if you don't see the twist coming
it will hold your interest a bit more though any movie-goer who sees
many thrillers will see it coming and where the film is heading.

Allen and I saw the ending differently but both scenarios work'
