When
did the movies stop knowing how to make a romance movie? It has been a
long time since I have seen a good one and let's not even talk about a
romantic comedy, which I think this was suppose to be.
There is so much wrong with this film but the two major mistakes are
the leads. I am a fan of Anne Hathaway but she is miscast in this film
playing an English girl with a very bad accent that makes it almost
impossible to understand what she is saying and just putting a pair of
glasses on does not make her look like a 'nerd'. Why she couldn't just
be an American, or an English actress with 'star power', is beyond
comprehension along with the fact that she, like all the characters,
except the one child, don't age a day even though the picture takes
place over 20 years!
There is zero chemistry between her and Jim Sturgess not to mention that even in a film is there any reason they would get
together. Both actors completely miss at playing the humor though Sturgess handles it at a better pace.
"One Day" is based on the best seller of the title by David Nicholls, who also wrote the screenplay, and is directed by Lone Sherfig both making the mistake of continuing the film, after the climatic moment, for an additional ten or so minutes.
Patricia Clarkson has an abbreviated role as do most of the other supporting characters and the third lead, Rafe Spall,
not only gives a mediocre performance, and is badly directed, performs
the sitting on the commode role which seems to be in every 'romantic'
film these days.
The film is listed as running 107 minutes but seems more like 120.
